The sun is setting on Vasque, but not before releasing one more boot to keep outdoor enthusiasts out on the trail.

Available now is the Horizon, a boot Vasque stated was designed for casual hikers who want athletic-inspired comfort “without sacrificing traditional trail protection.” Vasque created the boot with low and mid heights, and is available in both women’s and men’s sizing.

Vasque built the Horizon with sustainable materials, including 60 percent recycled content in the heel counters and 50 percent recycled linings. Also, the boot’s energy-returning EVA midsoles are made with 20 percent sugarcane.

The boots also feature waterproof nubuck leather upper, as well as the brand’s VasqueDry waterproofing technology, durable rubber outsoles, comfort-focused open-cell PU insoles and reflective details for added visibility.

The Vasque Horizon is available now in a low for $130 and a mid for $140 via Vasque.com. Once the Vasque website shutters, the boots will be available via the Irish Setter website.

Red Wing Shoe Co. confirmed via email with FN on Oct. 11 that it immediately stop new product development, marketing and purchasing for Vasque. Also, it stated any open orders scheduled to ship before January 2025 will be fulfilled, and all spring 2025 orders will be cancelled.

“What consumers seek and how they want to both shop and buy has changed dramatically,” a statement from Red Wing Shoe Co. emailed to FN read. “These changes have forced us to re-evaluate our business proposition and opportunity.”

The statement continued, “This is not a decision that we took lightly. In fact, we evaluated many possible strategic paths. In the end, however, we do not believe that there is a viable path forward. With limited resources, we believe it is best for us to focus on the incredible opportunities we see in our core business and brands at Red Wing Shoe Company.”

The North Face’s Innovative Offtrail Sneaker Features Kevlar Reinforcements, Speed-Lacing and a Hefty Tread https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/the-north-face-offtrail-sneaker-release-date-sept-2024-1203682607/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 15:21:41 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203682607 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

The North Face has launched an innovative new sneaker designed to handle tough terrain at the intersection of hiking and running.

The North Face Offtrail TR sneaker is out with two different builds, one with a Boa Fit System for quick adjustments and the other with a more traditional lacing system and Gore-Tex waterproofing.

The former, dubbed the Summit Series Offtrail TR, was developed with the help of TNF athletes and features a Boa Li2 dial as part of a system with a three-strap construction and protective shroud with a stretchy inner gaiter. At the forefoot, you’ll find overlasted Matryx fabric with Kevlar reinforcements for stability, protection and reinforcements, while ripstop is used for the heel. The sole unit is then made up of a high-rebound EVA midsole sitting atop a Surface Ctrl outsole with 7mm lugs. A forefoot rubber wrap bolsters grip and protection while boasting 10 percent rubber from smallholder farms committed to sustainable practices.

Appearing like a more typical outdoor sneaker with its lacing system, the Offtrail TR Gore-Tex boasts a waterproof membrane and more cushioning than its higher-priced counterpart with 24mm at the heel and 18 at the forefoot compared to 18mm and 12mm. Its upper also features the same mix of Kevlar-reinforced Matryx fabric and ripstrop, while its Surface CTRL outsole shortens its lugs to 5mm. Both versions of the shoe also feature a lightweight Skcore rockguard beneath the forefoot.

The North Face Summit Series Offtrail TR and Offtrail TR Gore-Tex are both out now through TNF’s website, with the former priced at $199 and the latter $179. While the Summit series build is available exclusively in gold and black, the Gore-Tex version also has options in taupe and grey, tonal grey and all-black.

Merrell Goes to Westeros With ‘House of the Dragon’-Themed Collection Including Three Shoes https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/merrell-house-of-the-dragon-collection-shoes-1203669980/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 15:33:59 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203669980

“House of the Dragon” fans can prepare to hike through Westeros with Merrell’s upcoming collection.

The outdoor footwear brand has partnered with the hit HBO series to release three new shoes inspired by its fantasy storyline, which serves as a prequel to the iconic “Game of Thrones.” The shoes will be made available throughout August and September, following the show’s Season 2 finale in early August.

Merrell x "House of the Dragon"

The $170 House Targaryen-themed shoe, a version of the brand’s Agility Peak 5 designed for trail running, is offered in a yellow colorway and slated for release on Aug. 17. Next up, the $170 House Hightower shoe, an iteration of the Moab Speed 2 designed for moderate-level hiking, is a turquoise-hued shoe available Aug. 25. Lastly, the $140 House Velaryon is a red and black take on the rugged hiking boot Moab 3, releasing Sept. 7. All of the shoes feature a dragon-shaped metal detail on the laces.

Devon Vanoostveen, brand marketing manager at Merrell, commented, “We’ve forged an alliance with the House of the Dragon. Inspired by the show’s noble houses, Merrell is introducing special editions of the Agility Peak 5, Moab 3, and Moab Speed 2. Each shoe embodies the spirit of a different house, from the Targaryens and Valeryons to the Hightowers.”

Vanoostveen continued, “Fans of both Merrell and House of the Dragon can now step into their own epic adventures, whether conquering rugged peaks or navigating treacherous terrain. The collaboration celebrates loyalty, resilience, and the timeless allure of mythical worlds.”

This isn’t the first “House of the Dragon” shoe collaboration. Nalebe recently partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to launch two pairs of boots, Team Black and Team Green — representing, respectively, House Targaryen and House Hightower.

In other recent Merrell partnerships, the company teamed up with Greyson Clothiers to create a new version of the Agility Peak 5 Zero Gore-Tex shoe.

Vasque to Release ‘Bigger, Warmer and Burlier’ St. Elias XT Hiking Boots https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/vasque-st-elias-xt-hiking-boot-1203668762/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 15:00:00 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203668762

Hiking footwear brand Vasque has announced that the St. Elias XT will be released Aug. 27. The new style is described as “the bigger, warmer, burlier, more-robust version of the recently-released St. Elias.”

St. Elias XT
St. Elias XT

With the XT in the name referring to “Extreme Terrain,” Vasque describes the $220 shoe as including “all the best features of the St. Elias – virtually zero break-in period, incredible traction, and comfort right out of the box,” in addition to several new characteristics.

These new characteristics include thicker leather and a rubber rand; a PU midsole and powerplate to enhance stability and durability; a Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole with 90-degree traction; and an extended padded heel collar keeping out dirt and helping with stability on uneven ground. The ankle-length boot is designed in a brown and black colorway. The original St. Elias is offered in a brown color called clay, and a second option is referred to as desert taupe.

Additional shoes offered by Vasque include the Talus WT NTX, a boot designed for the cold; and the Coldspark Ultradry, a winter boot crafted for cold weather activities. Vasque has also ventured into the light hike realm to cater to consumers who don’t want a conventional heavier hiking boot. The Here shoe, a part of the Re:connect Collection, was released in 2023; with a futuristic style, it’s designed to be a versatile shoe that can be worn in a variety of outdoor settings.

Amy Peck, director of product design at Vasque, discussed the new line. “Amid the pandemic, we saw a significant shift in how the general population thought about the outdoors,” Peck said. “This specific consumer is looking for a high-quality shoe that gives them the support and performance they need for their local parks and trails, but also could easily transition to walking their dog around the block – an everyday outdoor shoe.”

Whoopi Goldberg Slips Into Keen Hiking Shoes for SiriusXM Studios Interview https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/whoopi-goldberg-keen-hiking-shoes-siriusxm-studios-1203668543/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 16:22:58 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203668543 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Whoopi Goldberg made a rare appearance at SiriusXM Studios, she made a noteworthy appearance not only with her presence but also with her distinctive choice of footwear. Known for her eclectic and comfortable style, Goldberg’s latest ensemble did not disappoint.

Goldberg opted for the Keen Newport H2 Monochrome waterproof hiking shoes in the color Sea Moss. These shoes are not your typical celebrity choice for a radio show appearance, making them all the more noteworthy. The Newport H2 Monochrome is designed with adventure in mind, featuring a durable and water-resistant upper, a secure fit lace capture system, and a non-marking rubber outsole with razor siping for exceptional traction on wet surfaces. The Sea Moss color adds a refreshing pop of green, complementing Goldberg’s laid-back aesthetic.

Pairing the hiking shoes with white socks, Goldberg effortlessly blended practicality with a touch of retro charm. The contrast of the crisp white socks against the rich green hue of the Sea Moss shoes created a visually striking look. She completed her outfit with a casual light-wash denim jacket and distressed jeans, staying true to her relaxed and quirky fashion choices.

During her visit, Goldberg posed with SiriusXM host Bevy Smith, who brought her own flair to the event. Smith opted for a pair of elegant gold open-toe heels. The heels, with their metallic sheen and delicate design, provided a counterpoint to Goldberg’s more rugged footwear.

This isn’t the first time the “View” co-host has stepped out in a pair of Keen waterproof sandals. To celebrate her cannabis brand Emma & Clyde launch in Los Angeles this past weekend she opted to wear another pair of the outdoorsy footwear, this time in a black and deep blue hue.

The first step in hiking comfort is footwear, and for those with foot pain, the best insoles for hiking are a solid solution.

If you can find a good pair of hiking boots for men or women and always wear comfortable hiking socks, then hopefully you can alleviate foot pain before even worrying about insoles. But if you regularly need to search for shoes for high arches, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or options outfitted for other common foot problems, then you may also benefit from augmenting your footwear with the best hiking insoles. (And unless you’re wearing hiking sandals, chances are your hiking footwear will accommodate some form of insole.)

You can find a variety of insoles for different types of conditions and footwear styles, and the best insoles are designed to truly give your shoe a personalized fit, allowing you to trek further in comfort across a variety of terrains. We’ll go into more detail about what you should look for when you choose insoles for hiking, but in short, search for an insole that fits your arch, then look at your shoe’s inner and find an insole that offers adequate cushion without compromising your fit.

In my career, I’ve hiked thousands of miles on six continents, testing footwear along the way. The insoles listed here were chosen with those experiences as a testing matrix, along with extensive research and customer review analysis.

There are lots of great insoles that work well for hikers, but the Superfeet Hike Support is specifically designed for hiking and receives top marks in almost all areas. Formerly known as the Superfeet Trailblazer Comfort, these insoles have been around for a long time, and they’re a reliable performer.

The Aerospring Ascent Dual Comfort foam features two distinct layers of foam with an impressive amount of cushion, while the Moisturewick technology does a standout job keeping feet dry. The insoles’ Heel Impact Technology pod disperses heel pressure on steep descents, too. One downside is that this set of insoles only comes in a single medium-to-high arch profile, so folks who wear shoes for flat feet may want to steer clear.

What testers say: “These insoles have now become my go-to choice for my hiking boots. They offer superior comfort and support compared to the OEM insoles. The only downside might be the higher price tag, but I’d argue it’s worth the investment, especially if you’re on your feet daily. They’ve been highly effective in reducing foot fatigue, in my experience.”

Materials: Nylon

Zappos Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.8/5 stars
These low-profile insoles feature remarkable cushioning and received a Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). More than any other insole on this list, the Spenco RXs received high marks from reviewers around the world for their impact reduction for both feet and joints. We’d recommend them for those who wear shoes for knee pain for this reason. Four-way stretch fabric with antimicrobial Silpure also helps prevent blisters and minimize odor.

What testers say: “I needed arch support in my dress flats, but most supports out there have the heel cup/cushion, which makes shoes fall off my feet. The standalone arch support inserts are invariably too stiff and high for me. The Spenco RX Arch Cushion has a flat heel area and is soft without compromising support. I had to trim a lot on the side and in the toe area because I have small feet, but otherwise this has been great.”

Not everyone can fit a thick, cushioned midsole into their hiking boots. In cases where you may not have extra volume to spare, a thin, low-profile insole like the Spenco Total Support Max is an excellent move.  This insole’s 3-POD modulation system absorbs shock with three impact zones, while a deep heel cup offers secure heel support. Meanwhile, the contoured nature of these insoles lets the EVA layer mold to your unique foot shape. A specific focus on metatarsal arch support also moves pressure off of the ball of the foot, one area where people with flat feet often experience pain.

What testers say: “I have flat feet and severely overpronate… The moment I stood on these insoles in his office, I felt support and comfort. We trimmed them to size and my feet have been granted a new life. I get such support, stability, and comfort from these orthotics. Honestly better than I ever got from custom orthotics.”

These Easyfeet insoles are a top choice for high-arched hikers, using a combination of TPE foam along with polyurethane gel heel and metatarsal pads to offer best-in-class support, comfort, and durability. They also sport a deep heel cup for stability and a moisture-wicking fabric to prevent damp, sticky feet during warm-weather treks. These insoles are specially designed for hikers with an arch height of over one inch, so even if other insoles haven’t worked for you, it’s worth giving these a shot.

What testers say: “These insoles are great, especially while trimmable. I put them in some old Vans that I pulled the insoles out of. I walk the dog with these shoes since they’re old and worn, so the waste from dogs with lazy owners don’t stain or ruin other shoes. I had issues with pains in my one foot, but these solved that.”

The Sole Active insoles are among the best insoles for plantar fasciitis, certainly in the hiking world. Crafted for optimal foot support and alignment, these insoles boast a zero-drop design, a deep heel cup, and dynamic arch support, working in unison to foster neutral alignment and even pressure distribution. Heat- or wear-moldable, they offer a tailored fit, and have been clinically proven to reduce plantar fascia strain by an impressive 34 percent. A Polygiene coating with recycled silver salts adds effective odor control.

The commitment to sustainability is evident in the insole base, constructed from 20 percent post-industrial recycled EVA and packaged up in 100 percent plastic-free materials. All told, these insoles not only prioritize foot health but also offer a conscientious and eco-friendly purchase.

What testers say: “These are the best insoles I’ve ever used. Reduced my foot pain tenfold. They are a bit pricey but worth it. My insurance FSA covers them so check in to that if available to you.”

Materials: Foam
Arch Support: Low/medium/high
Amazon Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.5/5 stars
Designed for high-output endeavors with motion in mind Currex insoles are our top choice for long-distance hikers. These come in high-, medium-, and low-arch models, so there’s something for everyone here, though testers particularly responded well to the low-arch version.

Poron and Propo+ technology in the heel and forefoot adds shock absorption, while the zero drop profile keeps things organic, and a featherlight weight of 2 ounces makes for easy placement in just about any hiking shoe without a change in performance. The bamboo mid-layer and ventilated sole keep feet comfortable and dry, while the silicone heel grabbers offer added stability and control on steep terrain.

What testers say: “Fits my arch well and has proved to eliminate fatigue throughout the day. My go-to insole for poor-fitting flat insoles. Only need to trim a short piece from the toe to fit the shoe perfectly. Good cushion and durability.”

Made with a combination of polymer gel in the forefoot and a specialized air chamber in the heel, these insoles from Sof Sole are unlike any other on our list. These are some of the top insoles recommended for hiking with heavy loads, and the specialized heel chamber makes these a reliable choice for hikers who’ve suffered from heel pain in the past. However, they aren’t high in terms of arch support and are on the thicker side, so they work best if your hiking boot has a removable insole or if you’re looking for an insole that can fill up a higher-volume model.

What testers say: “I have FINALLY found an insole that doesn’t make my feet hurt!! These are great insoles! I’m buying a couple more for other shoes I own.”

Amazon Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.5/5 stars

The Oboz O Fit insoles are best looked at from a price point perspective. For a budget pick, these insoles for hiking boots really shine. Cleansport NXT odor control, Poron Vive in the cushioning pods, and unique Adaptive Cushioning Technology (ACT) strategically placed in the forefoot, combine for an overall extremely comfortable ride. They also have a thin, low-profile design, making it easy to slip into shoes with less space to spare.

What testers say: “I use these in all my work shoes. As a nurse, I’m on my feet for about 14 hours at a time and having Oboz is a MUST! The insoles have just the right amount of arch support to bring my feet in alignment and got rid of my foot, hip and back pain! I have since added them to all my shoes!”

What to Look for in the Best Insoles for Hiking

  • Arch support: “A common misconception is that many people assume that if they purchase a ‘supportive shoe’ or a shoe with ‘arch support,’ then there is no benefit to adding an insole,” says Minnesota-based podiatrist Dr. Paul Langer. “Insoles can actually improve shoe comfort and help address foot pain when a supportive shoe is not adequate.” Every person’s foot is different, but most insoles can be broken down by those with low, medium, or high arches. Adequate arch support helps distribute your body weight more evenly and reduces stress on your feet, so selecting the right arch height is critical. Of course, you can visit a footwear store to find your arch height, but it’s also possible to do so at home. Wet your foot and place it on a paper towel or piece of cardboard to see the impression your foot leaves. Once you see this outline, it’s easy to tell if your arches are high, medium, or low. The lower the arch, the wider the imprint of your foot. Compare your arch imprint to different arch heights online for a more accurate height estimate.
  • Fit: As NYC-based podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association Dr. Jacqueline Sutera says, no one size fits all. “You should start by fitting the insole for your foot type (flat feet versus high arches),” she says. Beyond this, the easiest way to choose an insole is simply to start trying them on. The insole you choose should make you more comfortable, not less, and unlike boots, there is little to no break-in period with an insole, so it should be comfortable fairly immediately. If not, look for a different insole. Beyond arch support, you should also look for insoles with a well-defined heel cup that cradles your heel. This helps stabilize the foot and improves overall comfort.
  • Thickness: Your shoe volume can also be impacted by insole thickness. Hiking boots typically have a large volume to accommodate thicker socks and the swelling your feet may undergo at altitude, but if your hiking boots have limited space, you might want thinner insoles to avoid making the fit too tight.
  • Material: Insoles are made from various materials, including foam, gel, plastic, and carbon fiber. Ultimately, different hikers prefer different materials. The important thing is that your insole provides enough comfort without compromising stability, and vice versa.
  • Firmness: An insole works by absorbing the shock from your stride with each step, and it does this best when your weight is distributed evenly throughout the surface area of the insole. That’s why the best insoles for hiking must also be flexible enough to stay with your foot throughout the walk cycle. Without a bit of rigidity, an insole won’t be able to adequately support your arch, but avoid insoles that are too firm, as they can alter your foot profile and fail to absorb shock properly.

Black Diamond Circuit 2.0 Shoe Review: A Stylish Urban Cruiser with Climbing Grip https://footwearnews.com/shop/shoes-guide/black-diamond-circuit-2-review-1203550308/ Tue, 07 Nov 2023 20:32:44 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203550308 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Marketed as an everyday shoe for climbing enthusiasts, Black Diamond’s Circuit 2.0 shoes are more similar to a pair of Vans or Converse, rather than a technical hiking boot or shoe. This isn’t a shoe just for climbers; it’s a shoe for anyone who appreciates unparalleled all-day comfort married with a slick, minimalist urban style, which happens to be equipped with climbing-level smear power.

Sporting Black Diamond’s BlackLabel sticky rubber outsole and flat platform, this is a decent shoe for basic scrambling — whether in the city or the local boulder field —and the rubber toe cap offers added protection and durability. It’ll certainly hang with the very best Nike skate shoes and adidas skate shoes, too.

That said, the Circuit 2.0 focuses on comfort, not performance. Thanks to a remarkably soft, shock-absorbing footbed, my Circuit 2.0s have quickly become my go-to daily shoe. They’re the first shoes I pick when heading out shopping, to the gym, bar, or any other around-town activity. They absorb each step like a pair of the best cushioned running shoes, retaining the streamlined look of a skater model. The lightweight upper remains incredibly breathable, too. I’ve rarely sweated in these shoes, even when wearing thick hiking socks.

The Circuit 2.0 receives Black Diamond’s “ECO” label, meaning it’s made with one or more of Black Diamond’s targeted sustainability attributes (in this case, several). The shoe’s lining and footbed are constructed from 100% recycled materials, and the three individual loops that wrap around the heel — so that the shoe can be hauled or clipped to a pack — are also constructed with recycled webbing. The midsole (among the comfiest I’ve experienced) incorporates recycled algae as part of the Bloom initiative, which removes over-abundant algae from aquatic ecosystems, transforming it into renewables that can replace fossil fuel-based product ingredients. In BD’s words, “This transformative process simultaneously helps to clean and re-oxygenate water systems while preventing carbon emissions associated with decomposition.”

So, there’s a lot of value here from a comfort, style, and sustainability perspective. The one mistake some people could make with the Circuit is assuming Black Diamond’s claim that this is an “approach shoe” that will perform on trails. The Circuit 2.0 is not a hiker. The sticky rubber smears well and certainly can perform on the occasional short scramble or hike, but beyond that, they don’t bode well on a trail for a significant portion of time. It’s an around-town shoe, for jaunts to the bookstore, coffee shop, grocery, and so on. But in that capacity, it smashes the competition.

Black Diamond Circuit 2.0 Shoes

Cons: Price

The Verdict

You could maybe find a comparable shoe for a slightly lower price point. But beyond that, I’m struggling to think of a single drawback with the Circuit 2.0s. Of all the shoes I’ve tested this year, these are my favorite “daily wear” model and one of the most comfortable men’s shoes. They’re well-cushioned, easy to slip on and off, and surprisingly breathable. I’ve worn them almost daily for three months now and have seen no signs of significant wear. I think I’ll be hitting the town in my Circuits for years to come.

Crocs is launching its first-ever collaboration with outdoor apparel, accessories and footwear brand ROA. The collaborative effort pulls inspiration from Villaggio Eni, known as a vacation village, found in the heart of the Dolomites in Venice, Italy.

The collection features rest and recovery at its center along with an appreciation for the natural world, prioritizing those themes throughout the design process. It includes the All-Terrain Atlas and Mellow clogs, which will be available in a wide range of sizes.

Retailing for $80, the All-Terrain clog is molded and utilizes Crocs‘ patent Croslite™ technology, a cozy cell resin material that aims to maximize cushioning, cradling the feet. The footwear is thoughtfully designed, incorporating secure nylon webbed back straps along with plush rubber MTN outsoles fitted with topographical tread for a non-slip feel no matter the terrain.

The Mellow clog retails for $70 and also features a molded design along with a roomy fit. The footwear is enveloped with Crocs’ lightweight LiteRide technology, highlighting modernized tech on a sleek and sophisticated silhouette.

Like many of its other styles, Crocs and ROA’s clogs are water-friendly, lightweight, quick drying and easy to clean. It’s likely the shoe will come in a wide range of sizes.

This year alone, Crocs has dropped a myriad of unique silhouettes that often feature playful and inventive designs, expanding its footwear horizons in the process. Crocs has lent its iconic clog, boot and sandal silhouettes to many franchises including everything from video game franchises to food.

The brand has dipped its proverbial toes into the worlds of Pop-Tarts, Crayola, Kanghyuk, Disney, Lisa Frank, Minecraft, Ron English, Pokemon and Aries in the past. Through these collaborations, Crocs has proved that their silhouettes are extremely versatile.

Crocs and ROA’s vacation-inspired clogs will be available for purchase on Oct. 20 via roa-hiking.com and crocs.com.
