He’s got sole. At the 38th annual FN Achievement Awards ceremony, to be held Dec. 4 in New York, veteran footwear designer Kenneth Cole will be recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor that has previously been bestowed on designers and executives including Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Sam and Libby Edelman, Bruce Nordstrom and Vince Camuto.

Cole and his namesake company have been an industry fixture for more than 40 years.

Throughout his career, Cole has used his platform to support a range of social justice movements, most recently focusing on ending mental health stigmas. In 2019, Cole helped to found The Mental Health Coalition, a large-scale effort aimed at bringing together influential nonprofits, businesses, brands, celebrities and influencers in a coordinated effort to destigmatize mental health conditions. The company has prioritized wellness outside its business with charitable collection drops, as well as internally through employee programs.

The designer has also been known for his eye-brow-raising ads that have tackled controversial topics such as gun reform, the Iraq war, AIDS epidemic, climate change and much more. “You can change your outfit, you can outfit change,” has been one of the brand’s go-to taglines, for instance.

“That’s the ultimate challenge,” Cole told FN in September 2023. “How do we do what we do in the ordinary course and connect it to something bigger? And that’s something I’ve tried to do for 40 years, and still try to do.”

It’s a big year for Cole. Earlier this month, his documentary, “A Man with Sole: The Impact of Kenneth Cole,” premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival. The doc explores his life, career and activism.

In 2019, Cole and Donna Karan were honored with the Icon Award for Social Impact winners at the FNAAs for their philanthropic work with Haiti. Through Karan’s Urban Zen retail concept and Cole’s Gentle Souls footwear label, the duo debuted a shoe collection featuring 10 Haitian-inspired looks made by a group of the country’s artisans.

Cole will join more soon-to-be announced winners at the 2024 FNAAs on Dec. 4 in New York.

Storm Reid Is FN’s Style Influencer of the Year https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/awards/storm-reid-style-influencer-award-fnaa-2023-1203554358/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 19:43:47 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203554358

“Euphoria” and “The Last of Us” star Storm Reid is undoubtedly one of Gen Z’s ultimate trendsetters.

Her noteworthy red-carpet moments and longtime relationship with New Balance made her the right fit for FN’s Style Influencer of the Year honor. Reid will take home the honor at the 2023 FN Achievement Awards on Nov. 29 in New York.

The actress, who was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the HBO series “The Last of Us,” has been a New Balance brand ambassador since October 2021 and has starred in numerous campaigns for the athletic brand.

In August, the “The Nun II” star and New Balance took their relationship to the next level with the launch of Reid’s first signature sneaker with the brand, the New Balance x Storm Reid CT302.

Reid, who is an avid sneaker fan, told FN in an exclusive interview in July that the process of creating her first shoe with New Balance was “surreal” as she feels “blessed” to be a part of the company’s family.

“I’ve always loved sneakers,” Reid admitted. “Actually, my ultimate dream was to design my own sneaker one day. But I had no idea this would happen so soon. I thought this would come later down the line. But I’m very grateful and excited about this opportunity.”

Aside from her New Balance tie-up, the rising Hollywood star has also collaborated on collections with other stars like basketball player Stephen Curry and brands like PacSun.

Reid, who often works with stylist Jason Bolden, is known for her unique fashion sense. She’s often seen gracing red carpets in statement-making looks from designers like Jonathan Simkhai, Prada, Moschino, Paris Georgia and Acne Studios with shoes from Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Schutz and Coach.

With this award, Reid joins a roster of major style stars. Previous FN Style Influencer of the Year award winners include Cardi B, Law Roach, Hailey Bieber, J Balvin and Alexa Chung.

Reid also joins other 2023 FNAA honorees, including Icon Award honoree Jessica Simpson; Sam and Libby Edelman for the Lifetime Achievement Award; Skechers USA Inc. co-founder and president Michael Greenberg as Person of the Year; Roger Vivier’s Gherardo Felloni as Designer of the Year; Shoe of the Year, the Adidas Samba; and Kith as Retailer of the Year.

Jessica Simpson to Receive the Icon Award at the 2023 FNAAs https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/awards/jessica-simpson-icon-award-fnaa-2023-1203547980/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 19:28:41 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203547980

With more than two decades in the entertainment business and nearly as many years in the footwear industry, Jessica Simpson has long been known as celebrity fashion’s queen of shoes.

Now, Simpson will be honored with the Icon Award at the 2023 Footwear News Achievement Awards on Nov. 29 in New York.

The award will celebrate the star’s long career in footwear and fashion through the Jessica Simpson Collection brand, which she first launched in 2005. Partnering with industry veteran Vince Camuto (and mother Tina), Simpson’s initial footwear deal became the catalyst for a billion-dollar company that now includes a variety of categories and licenses within fashion, accessories and beauty.

“We’ve documented every step of Jessica’s career — from reality star to business mogul. In an era when celebrity brands come and go, she’s proven she has staying power,” said Michael Atmore, editorial director of FN and chief brand officer of Fairchild Media Group. “Together with her mother Tina, Jessica is embarking on the next big chapter of her evolving brand story. For all these reasons and many more, we are thrilled to bestow her with the industry’s highest honor.”

In 2021, Simpson and her mother officially reacquired full ownership of the brand from Sequential Brands Group, a move that helped the duo to launch new categories and build out the Jessica Simpson Collection’s e-commerce efforts, bringing the site to profitability in just two years. The brand continues its longstanding footwear licensing partnership with Camuto Group to this day.

Simpson is the third honoree to receive the Icon Award at the annual awards show — Iris Apfel was honored in 2016; and Kathy, Nicky and Paris Hilton took home the prize as a trio at the 2021 FNAAs.

Simpson also joins other 2023 FNAA honorees, including Sam and Libby Edelman for the Lifetime Achievement Award; Skechers USA Inc. co-founder and president Michael Greenberg as Person of the Year; Roger Vivier’s Gherardo Felloni as Designer of the Year; Shoe of the Year, the Adidas Samba; and Kith as Retailer of the Year.

Fergie Kicks Up Her Metal-Plated Platform Heels in Disco Pants on ‘Shoe Oscars’ Red Carpet With Nelly at FN Achievement Awards 2022 https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/red-carpet/fergie-fnaa-2022-red-carpet-outfit-pants-platform-shoes-1203375059/ Thu, 01 Dec 2022 01:57:08 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203375059 Fergie suited up in groovy style for the 36th annual FN Achievement Awards in New York City tonight.

The Black Eyed Peas alum dressed up in all-black with a double-breasted blazer made with large embellishments along the bodice adding to her rockstar style. Underneath, she wore a matching black turtleneck, which she paired with bell bottoms giving a ’70s twist to her outfit.

Fergie accessorized the look with a Prada re-edition 2005 satin bag with crystals. She coordinated her chunky silver rings with the metallic chain on her bag. The singer styled her hair down the middle in loose waves while she went for a soft lipstick color and subtle smoky eye.

Her hidden heels played into the style. Although they were not visible, the singer kicked up her heels alongside Nelly and revealed a chunky platform.

When it comes to footwear, Fergie goes for styles that make a statement, like the sparkly block-heeled platform sandals she strapped on for her unforgettable performance with Jack Harlow at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.

For 36 years, the annual FN Achievement Awards — often called the “Shoe Oscars” — have celebrated the style stars, best brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans. The 2022 event is supported by presenting sponsor Nordstrom, as well as Caleres, FDRA, Merrell, Vibram and Volumental.

Why Dua Lipa and Billy Walsh Will Receive FN’s First Collection of the Year Award for Puma Flutur Drop 2 https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/culture/dua-lipa-puma-flutur-drop-2-collection-of-year-award-fnaa-1203369939/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 19:13:35 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203369939 On Nov. 30, Dua Lipa and Billy Walsh will be honored with the Collection of the Year award at the 36th annual FN Achievement Awards. Below is an article from the magazine’s Nov. 28 print issue about what defined the duo’s creative collaboration.

Dua Lipa is the epitome of what the present-day pop star should look like. She’s effortlessly cool, hardworking (she’s just wrapped her nearly year-long world tour) and, best of all, inclusive. Lipa has been an outspoken LGBTQ ally and is vocal about human rights issues, including gender equality.

She’s the dream partner for a brand. So it’s no wonder Puma signed the “Future Nostalgia” singer to be the face of the company’s women’s business in a multiyear deal.

“We were drawn towards her creativity, passion and drive and the way in which she resonates with the young female consumer,” said Adam Petrick, Puma’s global director of brand and marketing at the time of the announcement in November 2020. “But most importantly, we were moved by her authentic passion to close the gender gap and look forward to supporting her through several brand initiatives we have planned together. We think she embodies what today’s consumer is looking for in a role model.”

Since 2020, Lipa and Puma have since worked together to help inspire women around the world through global campaigns and her own collections — most notably, the Puma x Dua Lipa Flutur Drop 2 line, which launched in July.

Lipa and longtime Puma collaborator, designer and songwriter Billy Walsh worked closely together on the line that’s been named FN’s first Collection of the Year.

This second installation of the ongoing Flutur product collaboration with Puma was inspired by Lipa’s Albanian heritage (“flutur” is the Albanian word for “butterfly”). Dua Lipa’s butterfly graphic shares placement with Puma’s fast cat insignia in much of the collection.

“The butterfly represents transition, metamorphosis and new beginnings,” Lipa said after the line launched in July 2022. “I felt like in the beginning, when I first started working on drop one, the butterfly already had a lot of meaning for me. [With Drop 2], that meaning has just solidified itself and become even more important in my life. It feels like everything progressed and manifested itself in that way.”

Flutur Drop 2 includes vibrant colors and form-fitting looks inspired by oldschool rave culture. It also spans over 30 items in inclusive, unisex sizing. Standouts are the flared T7 tracksuit and the unique Cell Dome King sneaker.

“I’m super obsessed that we got to make a metallic silver shoe. It’s actually two shoes put together: The King and Cell. The King is such an iconic Puma shoe. I love that kind of nostalgia,” she said of the style.

The line also features three variations of the Mayze silhouette, including the Mayze, Mayze Boot and Mayze Metallic. Meanwhile, hues of pink, purple and orange define the collection’s color palette that includes holographic details and retro silhouettes shown through striped jerseys, plus more throwback sportswear silhouettes.

Law Roach Is FN’s Style Influencer of the Year https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/awards/law-roach-style-influencer-award-fnaa-2021-1203208037/ Mon, 15 Nov 2021 15:52:44 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203208037 Law Roach, stylist and image architect, has had a year chock-full of major milestones, and to commemorate his accomplishments, FN is crowning Roach as the Style Influencer of the Year at the 35th annual FN Achievement Awards.

Roach has been responsible for styling Zendaya for years, and in 2021 her looks have been turned up a notch. Who can forget the custom Balmain leather look she wore to the Venice Film Festival, for instance? Roach also accompanied the star at the 2021 CFDA Fashion Awards where she took home the Fashion Icon award, wearing a custom Vera Wang ensemble that featured a red bandeau top and a peplum-style skirt that hid her red heels.

Other clients include Halsey, Priyanka Chopra and Lewis Hamilton — the latter of which tasked Roach to pick the attendees for his table at the 2021 Met Gala, which he bought in order to host up-and-coming Black designers. (The guests also included Kenneth Nicholson, Edvin Thompson and Jason Rembert.)

Not only did Roach attend the Met Gala and styled himself, but he was a notable force on the red carpet, dressing nine other clients, among them Hamilton, Kehlani, Alton Mason, Natalia Bryant, Hunter Schafer, Addison Rae, Miles Watson, Kirsten Corley Bennett and Chance the Rapper.

In addition, the stylist has proved time and time again that he can deliver on the biggest stage like during the height of the 2021 awards season when he dressed “Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy at the Golden Globes. She wowed in an unforgettable green, custom Dior Haute Couture gown.

Earlier this year, the Hollywood Reporter named Roach the stylist of the year, which was one of many covers he personally landed. Since then, he has been featured on the covers of Coveteur and Out Magazine.

Not only is Roach influencing style on the red carpet but he’s also on your TV screens. For the last year and a half, he has starred on the HBO Max series “Legendary,” where he can be seen judging the contestants’ outfits and fashion.

For 35 years, the annual FN Achievement Awards (often called the “Shoe Oscars”) have recognized the style stars, best brand stories, ardent philanthropists, emerging talents and industry veterans. Last year, Cardi B took home the award for Style Influencer. Other past winners also include J Balvin, Christie Brinkley, Hailey Baldwin, Alexa Chung and Chiara Ferragni.

After going virtual in 2020, the FNAAs will return with an in-person celebration on Nov. 30 at Cipriani South Street in New York. The event is supported by presenting sponsor Nordstrom, as well as Authentic Brands Group, FDRA, Informa, On and Wolverine Worldwide.

Additional honorees include Ronnie Fieg as Person of the Year, Allyson Felix for Launch of the Year and Authentic Brands Group as Company of the Year. Additionally, Kathy, Paris and Nicky Hilton will take home The Icon Award.

FN Names Kith’s Ronnie Fieg as the 2021 Person of the Year https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/culture/ronnie-fieg-person-of-the-year-2021-fnaa-1203208012/ Mon, 15 Nov 2021 14:05:30 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203208012 Kith founder Ronnie Fieg has been named the 2021 Person of the Year by Footwear News, in recognition of his bold business acumen and uncanny talent for creating covetable product.

While other retailers tread cautiously this year, Fieg charged full speed ahead by opening a sprawling flagship in Paris, plus a door in Hawaii. And to mark the 10th anniversary of the brand, Kith released its most elevated collection to date for fall ’21, which it celebrated in a 300-page collectible book starring a number of longtime fans and friends, including Raekwon, Daniel Arsham, Nigel Sylvester, Victor Cruz, Adrien Brody, Michael J. Fox and Bobby Cannavale.

And if that wasn’t enough to keep Fieg occupied, the fashion veteran also took on the new category director role with Clarks, where he has pledged to bring a modern perspective to the iconic British shoe label.

Meanwhile, the streetwear guru also remains a go-to collaborator for the biggest brands in the business. (After all, he was named the FN Collaborator of the Year in 2017.) To mark the debut of his Paris and Hawaii stores, Fieg created a special-edition Nike Air Force 1 for each door, inspired by the area. And one of Kith’s best collaborative collections for its 10-year anniversary was with Vault by Vans. The range, which arrived in May, featured 10 premium iterations of the iconic Slip-On silhouette. Other collab partners this year included Birkenstock, Wilson and Adidas.

What’s more, Fieg and his team signed on in February to the 15 Percent Pledge, to hold the company accountable for promoting more Black designers and creatives.

Allyson Felix to Receive FN’s Launch of the Year Award for Her Saysh Brand https://footwearnews.com/entertainment-news/culture/allyson-felix-saysh-fnaa-2021-launch-year-1203207909/ Mon, 15 Nov 2021 14:03:14 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203207909 Allyson Felix has one more title to add to her long list of accomplishments: FNAA winner.

The Olympic gold medalist will be honored at the FN Achievement Awards ceremony on Nov. 30 with the Launch of the Year award for her new Saysh brand.

A decorated track-and-field star, Allyson Felix gained national attention in 2019 when she made a public split from her sponsor, Nike, over its unfair policies regarding pregnant athletes. So in June, Felix debuted her own sneaker label, which she co-founded with her brother, Wes Felix. Saysh is described as a “by women, for women” imprint that also has a strong community focus.

The company launched with the Saysh One, a women’s-specific sneaker developed by renowned designers Natalie Candrian and Tiffany Beers. And Allyson Felix proved the power of her products on the track at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, when she won a bronze medal in the women’s 400-meter dash while wearing a bespoke pair of Saysh 0.07 Spike shoes.

But beyond footwear, the company also created the Saysh Collective, a membership-based group that aims to offer “connection, community and correspondence” that aligns with its mission to “undermine inequality with female creativity and athleticism.”

That ethos is also displayed in Saysh’s business practices. Wes Felix told FN in the spring that the nascent brand employs roughly 30 people, and in the future, it will look to offer job opportunities to retired athletes looking for a fresh start.
