Love it or hate it, Coachella has a reputation for it festival fashion. Last year, attendees hit the desert in a variety of shoe styles, from combat boots to platforms sandals. But one the most popular looks by far were cowboy boots. And then there was, of course, the “bad fashion.”

When Coachella made its comeback after a two-year hiatus in 2022, it ushered in the return of festival style, the look-at-me ethos of revenge fashion featuring barely-there minis, strategically sexy cutouts and sequins galore (all somehow filtered through a Y2K style lens). And it wasn’t pretty.

To be clear, there has always been a healthy dose of bad fashion at Coachella or any other music festival, for that matter. Most everyone looks back to the halcyon days of the original 1969 Woodstock festival with ethereal visions of hippies in delicate crochet and other artisanal items, but a closer look reveals that there was way too much fringe and tie-dye (not to mention a healthy coating of mud). And let’s not forget the literal dumpster fire that was Woodstock ’99.

In 2019, Coachella attendees and other festival goers seemed to be suffering from a generous amount of style FOMO, the result of social media one-upmanship that seemed to cause an outpouring of exponentially wacky looks (and not so much in the so-bad-it’s-good sort of way). While music artists and other celebrities relied on stylists and costume designers to create memorable performance looks, influencers and everyday attendees alike tried the their hand at looks that were just too advanced for amateurs. So-bad-it’s-good campy fashion quickly devolved into so bad-it’s-really-bad style memes to devour. (But since social media only works in extremes, bad-good and bad-bad tends to get the same level of reaction.)

For attendees, festivals provide a pause from reality, and with it the opportunity the same pause to any dress codes they might follow in the real world.

Coachella weekend one.

It’s hard to say if the fashion will have gone from bad to worse at this year’s Coachella, which kicks off on Friday in Indio, Calif.

In 2023, attendees upped the ante when it came to their outrageous looks. And platform heels, fringe hats, polyester matching sets and pasties, may have taken things a little too far.

In 2022, the looks on stage could be described best as wonky. Doja Cat (always a purveyor of campy fashion on the edge of taste) wore a collection of tattered, crystal-embellished rags. This year, she is headlining the festival with her set scheduled for Sunday. Karol G was strapped into a mishmash of denim belts. Olivia O’Brien’s trompe l’oeil leotard was made to look like a pair of acid wash jeans with matching acid wash denim jacket. Orville Peck wore his fringed leather face mask, a signature accessory for the artist that took on a kind of Rorschach symbolism in this new era. Mariah the Scientist’s feather-accented nude bodysuit looked like it would fit in with a crowd of influencers.

Coachella’s bad fashion also took on a new meaning at the Revolve Festival in 2022, whose logistical mishaps earned it the label of “Fyre Festival 2.0.” The thigh-baring wrap skirts, go-go boots and ubiquitous scarf tops influencers were sporting as they fought one another to get on shuttles to the event felt appropriate for the moment — sartorial symbols, if you will, of the grifter age we are living through. If Anna Delvey were attending Coachella, she’d probably be in a wide-weave crocheted dress, cutout monokini underneath and big sunglasses on top.

This year’s potential bad fashion — and perhaps even that of the years leading up — also points to the proverbial vibe shift that trend forecasters have been pointing to lately. A closer look at photos of festival goers may prove the case. Zoom in on their faces. Beaming with joy, maybe even a little outright pride of their outfit choices, they seem to say, “Bad fashion? I’m in.”

If you’re looking to be the best-dressed at Coachella, stylist Maeve Reilly took to TikTok for her dos and don’ts. “Leave the heels at home,” she said in a video. “This is not the time or place. There’s so much walking.” Don’t wear platforms, don’t wear moon boots,” she added. Another tip? Avoid face crystals, mini skirts, or anything too uncomfortable. “Don’t be too naked,” said Reilly.

If you keep it simple, don’t overthink it and just follow these celebrity stylist tips and tricks, you may be the best-dressed there. “The biggest trap people fall into when they are hitting the festival circuit is simply overdoing it with too many colors, too many sparkles, too many accessories. Keep it on-trend. My approach is to keep it understated,” stylist Andrew Gelwicks explained. And he’s right. Don’t go overboard with Coachella kitsch, and when you do add on your accessories, make sure they have a purpose.

For the fashion world, the spring 2024 season is shaping up to be something of a recalibration.

After a few years and at least six seasons in which designers and consumers alike have tried to figure out just what to do with fashion and how to dress themselves, the industry may finally be settling into something of an equilibrium. From the cozy phase of 2020 and early 2021 (remember wearing matching sets all day everyday?) to 2021’s revenge fashion phase (we don’t miss all of those cutouts and naked dresses, but we do miss the all-sizes body positivity), to fall ’23’s turn to stoicism and quiet luxury amidst rising inflation and economic uncertainty, the fashion industry has had wild pendulum swings. This time around, it’s finding a bit more balance.

Here, a look at 19 of the top trends for spring ’24.

After all the hoopla of the Golden Globes on Sunday, this year’s awards season is coming in fast and furious. Just days after, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its 2024 Governors Awards — and plenty of boldfaced names showed.

While the awards have been around since 2009, they have begun to gain more traction over the past few years as the Academy has ramped up its lead-up events to the big show: the Oscars (which will take place this year on Sunday, March 10).

Tuesday night’s appearances confirmed some of the key trends that cropped up at the Golden Globes: red, all-black suiting and sumptuous black velvet.

The last of which appeared on Olivia Rodrigo, who wore a vintage Saint Laurent gown from The Reallist. The gowns silk bodice and train came with velvet twist bustline, and the material contrast felt quietly elevated.

Margot Robbie also wore black velvet, with a Celine gown that featured numerous cutouts and a V-shaped crystal embroidery. The actress paired the look with Fred Leighton diamonds and heels by Manolo Blahnik (a clear favorite for the “Barbie” star, though you couldn’t see them with the dress hemline).

Rosamund Pike continues to showcase her penchant for fabulous style with a signature quirk. After her vintage Dior tea-length gown with Philip Treacy veil at the Golden Globes, the “Saltburn” actress chose an Erdem rose gown with a sweetheart neckline from the designer’s pre-fall ’24 collection. The look not only tapped into the red dress trend, it also hinted at spring ’24’s rosette trend that’s coming on the heels of all those holiday bows everywhere.

Pike’s “Saltburn” co-star wore one of the most surprising looks of the night: a tuxedo that happened to be from Stella McCartney’s spring ’24 women’s collection. It’s a great addition to the genderless fashion conversation. Women wearing a men’s look is nothing now, but to see more of something borrowed from the girls is delightful.

The Story Behind Michigan Football’s Cartier ‘Buffs’ https://footwearnews.com/fashion/trends/michigan-football-cartier-buffs-sunglasses-1203577024/ Tue, 09 Jan 2024 09:01:36 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203577024

If anyone tuning into the post-game celebration of the University of Michigan’s win against the University of Washington in the College Football Playoff National Championship found it odd that coach Jim Harbaugh was wearing sunglasses at night and indoors, there is more to the story than meets the eyewear.

The sunglasses are by Cartier and they are called “buffs” — for the buffalo horn material that adorns the eyewear’s temples. They have fast become a tradition for the team’s defense; after any turnover, the athlete responsible for the play gets to wear a pair of Cartier buffs (or “turnover buffs”), taking a photo with his defense teammates in celebration.

The turnover buffs routine was dreamed up by player Will Johnson. The Michigan sophomore cornerback hails from the Detroit area, where Cartier buffalo horn sunglasses (also called “Cardi’s”) are a preeminent accessories choice. The player went to local Detroit jeweler Zeidman’s to order the glasses, which have since made the rounds on the defensive team.

Cartier’s C Décor eyewear, known to Detroiters and Michigan football fans as Cartier “buffs.”

The glasses appear to be from Cartier’s C Décor line and — in addition to their “buff” — are also characterized by their rimless lenses and distinct aughts-era aesthetic. The eyewear retails for around $3,545, depending on the style and fine jewelry customization (diamonds and other gemstones can be added) and is available only through authorized jewelers or by special order from the brand itself (currently only a few are remaining at Cartier’s Fifth Avenue flagship in New York). For anyone wanting the look without the price tag, Johnson has also started selling novelty versions of the eyewear, along with some catchy merch.

At Monday night’s game, it was Johnson himself who caught the evening’s first interception, giving him his very own turn in the buffs. The play would also help to earn him the CFP’s defensive MVP prize. Johnson took the opportunity to give Harbough his very own pair to celebrate the win in style.

7 Fashion and Shoe Trends From the Golden Globes https://footwearnews.com/fashion/trends/golden-globes-fashion-trends-red-shoes-velvet-white-dresses-tea-length-gowns-1203576480/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 20:17:22 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203576480

The 2024 Golden Globes officially brought back red carpet fashion, and with it a slew of looks to digest.

While the show — which kicks off awards season — certainly helps to predict forthcoming celebrity red carpet moments, the evening’s best dressed also help to drive the trends that will influence the evening and formal wear market, from wedding guest and bridal party looks to proms and parties around the world.

From gown silhouettes to key color trends, red carpet awards shows such as the Golden Globes offer viewers and fans both inspiration and a sneak peek at what designers will be offering in stores and on the runways for the rest of the year.

Here, seven of the best fashion and shoe trends that cropped up from this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

1. Red from head to toe

Many, many Golden Globes attendees chose red as their statement-making color for the evening. From Florence Pugh in Valentino and Ayo Edebiri in Prada to Julianne Moore in Bottega Veneta and Rachel Brosnahan in Sergio Hudson, there was no shortage of red looks, done in a distinctive vintage lipstick red hue (cool, blue undertones are key here — forget the orangey, Mediterranean aesthetics of last year’s “tomato girl summer”). Attendees all matched their red frocks with red heels, from classic satin pumps to peep-toe sandals. While both fall ’23 and spring ’24 runways focused on red, we can expect this footwear trend to take a stronger hold in the real world of retail and consumers this year.

2. Tea length hemlines

Plenty of stars swapped the typical floor-sweeping grand gowns of years past and opted for a vintage tea-length hemline. There’s no question that Prada’s runway collections — particularly its fall ’23 line, with its retro A-line skirts — have something to do with it, and we saw a key tea length look by the Italian brand on actress Brie Larson. We can expect formal wear and even bridal designers to incorporate more of these silhouettes into their 2024 and 2025 collections.

3. Palette-cleansing white looks

A key spring ’24 runway trend, the evening winter white look first migrated to stars at the Academy Gala last month, then onto last night’s Golden Globes red carpet. Keri Russell chose a Jil Sander fringed tank dress, while Natasha Lyonne also highlighted textured white in a Schiaparelli number. Hunter Schafer’s pale, pale pink-to-white Prada dress was an organza extravaganza. This trend may also be picking up steam with the comeback of Phoebe Philo, whose new eponymous line had plenty of textured white.

4. Matchy-matchy footwear

Red wasn’t the only color on the red carpet at the 2024 Golden Globes. There was also green on Taylor Swift, whose Gucci dress and Christian Louboutin pumps equaled one of the best looks of the night. Lavender frocks and matching footwear came from Brie Larson and Helen Mirren. The matchy look recalls the dyed-to-match trend that used to dominate bridal and bridal party wear back in the mid-to-late 20th century. We could be seeing a comeback in 2024.

5. Classic pumps

There were some strappy sandals here and there, but classic, pointed toe pumps ruled the red carpet on Sunday night. From Larson’s Prada pumps (a key brand for the fall ’23 trend) to plenty of Christian Louboutin, the pump had the power.

6. Black velvet

Maybe it’s just the winter season, or a holdover from all of that holiday party dressing. But black velvet was all over the red carpet at the Globes. From Angela Bassett’s off-the-shoulder, long-sleeved mermaid gown, custom made by Dolce & Gabbana, to Jennifer Lawrence’s gathered velvet dress by Dior, and Amanda Seyfried’s Armani Privé, everyone was swaddled in the sumptuous fabric (still more: Annette Bening also in Dolce & Gabbana; Cillian Murphy in Saint Laurent; Timothée Chalamet in Celine). While we didn’t see much of this on the spring ’24 runways, the year’s fashion focus on texture could push black velvet to be the new black.

7. Black-on-black tuxedos — with a shoe twist

Save for a few who braved the all-white trend, guys at the Golden Globes stuck with black this year, and not just your basic black tuxedo and white shirt; instead, all-black looks ruled. That went all the way down to the toes, where versions of the black patent leather tuxedo shoe were remixed, from Colman Domingo’s Louis Vuitton look to Jon Batiste’s Jimmy Choo monkstraps, to Timothée Chalamet’s patent leather Chelsea boot — a favorite of Celine designer Hedi Slimane, dressed up for evening.

The Best Shoes at the Golden Globes — From Taylor Swift’s Louboutins to Ayo Edebiri’s Prada Pumps https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/golden-globes-2024-best-shoes-taylor-swift-ayo-edebiri-selena-gomez-1203576437/ Mon, 08 Jan 2024 14:56:11 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203576437

The anticipation was high for Hollywood’s return to the red carpet at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday night. Not only did the awards show officially kick off the year’s awards season, it also broke the dam, so to speak, on a drought of red carpet fashion and celebrity style during the industry’s writers’ and actors’ strikes last summer and fall.

But the evening not only opened the floodgates on celebrity red carpet fashion. It also brought a few sartorial changes for the new year, both in evening wear and footwear.

A shift in hemlines was noticeable. While there were still plenty of sweeping, floor length gowns, a significant number of actresses opted instead for the vintage tea-length hemline. The upwards move was a boon for shoe fans, as put more footwear on view.

Selena Gomez at the 81st Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 7, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California, in an Armani Privé asymmetrical hem gown with ruched and knotted bodice, plus red satin pumps to match.

On foot, satin pumps were the big winners, and they were part of a trend to match your shoes with your dress (all of the evening’s red dresses came with red shoes). Selena Gomez wore a pair of red satin pumps with her Armani Privé gown, as did Globe winner Ayo Edebiri, matching satin pumps with her Prada silk and chiffon column gown with a train. Rachel Brosnahan also did the red dress trend, pairing a stunning Sergio Rossi gown with Christian Louboutin’s red peep-toe sandals. (The footwear designer was a clear winner for the evening, and even showed up on the red carpet himself.)

Taylor Swift opted for green instead of the evening’s red, but still tapped into the matchy-matchy look. The music artist had a complete color match with a pair of metallic green Christian Louboutin pumps and a custom sequined Gucci cutout dress.

Perhaps the best example of the tea-length hemline trend and matching footwear came from Brie Larson. The actress stepped out on the carpet in a lavender Prada gown with a sweetheart neckline and perfectly A-line-shaped skirt, with grey-lavender pumps to match. The look certainly showcases the influence of Prada, both in the general fashion landscape but also now clearly on the celebrity red carpet. Directly or indirectly, we have Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons to thank for the evening’s rising hemlines — and pointy-toed pumps.

As the unofficial kickoff to awards season each January, the Golden Globe Awards set the tone for what red carpet fashion and celebrity style will look like in the coming months — and even the rest of the year.

While the event certainly helps to predict forthcoming celebrity red carpet moments, the Golden Globes and its awards season takeoff also help to drive the trends that will influence the evening and formal wear market, from wedding guest and bridal party looks to proms and parties around the world. From gown silhouettes to key color trends, red carpet awards shows such as the Golden Globes offer viewers and fans both inspiration and a sneak peek at what designers will be offering in stores and on the runways for the rest of the year.

This year’s Golden Globes arrived after a serious fashion dry spell for Hollywood. A summer and early fall of writers’ and actors’ strikes resulted in a dearth of celebrity fashion moments; even off the red carpet, as actors remained modest in their fashion roles out of solidarity with their fellow actors and writers.

Tonight’s red carpet saw fashion come roaring back. But wasn’t the sort of “revenge dressing” we saw a few years ago. Instead, celebrities looked to ways that they could make a statement but keep things classic; to not look like they were trying too hard. In other words, they did it the Old Hollywood way.

Ayo Edebiri at the 81st Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 7, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.
Ayo Edebiri at the 81st Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 7, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California, in Prada.

Many turned to one of the oldest tricks in the book: wearing red. Out of the entire crimson wave (sorry), it was Ayo Edebiri who clocked one of the top looks of the night — and ended up winning a Globe for best actress in a comedy series, to boot. The actress’ red silk and chiffon Prada column gown with a voluminous but concise train and matching red satin pumps rose to the occasion.

Keri Russell at the 81st Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 7, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.

Others turned to a palette cleanser for classic statement looks. There were many all-white looks on the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet, from vintage Balmain on Elle Fanning to Keri Russell’s fringed Jil Sander tank dress, a standout of the night for its unexpected texture.

So, too, was Natasha Lyonne’s Schiaparelli gown, with its exaggerated boning and texture, which came from matte vertical sequins. A pair of oversized oyster shell earrings from Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry made the look even more memorable, and there were reportedly a pair of matching cream boots underneath that gown.

There was also plenty of black on the red carpet once more this year, though not with the sort of symbolism it held in 2018 when attendees showed solidarity with the Me Too movement. This year’s classic black looks at the show were timeless — and maybe a little boring, save for Rosamund Pike’s vintage Dior lace gown, worn wonderfully and weirdly with a Philip Treacy veil that the actress chose to hide a scar from a skiing accident.

The return to Old Hollywood dressing for the new age extended down to the toes, where most attendees matched their colorful gowns with their heels, primarily in all of those red looks. A red satin pump is the new evening shoe for 2024, according to the Golden Globes red carpet.

There were a few other surprising colors, namely in lavender, from actresses Helen Mirren (in Dolce & Gabbana) and Brie Larson in Prada. Both wore grey/silver heels with their looks, which both embodied the evening’s fresh round of optimism. So did Taylor Swift’s green sequined bustier gown from Gucci, matched with green metallic Christian Louboutin pumps. Happy new year, indeed.
