Ice Spice Teases ‘Y2K!’ Album Wearing Pink I.AM.GIA Tracksuit and Black Cat Air Jordan 4s https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/ice-spice-air-jordan-4s-black-cat-y2k-album-1203669360/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 01:45:45 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203669360 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Ice Spice is part of the movement bringing back fashion of the early aughts. The rapper, who was born on January 1, 2000, promoted her forthcoming debut album “Y2K!” on July 25 wearing a pink tracksuit by I.AM.GIA emblazoned with the title and Air Jordan 4s in the beloved Black Cat colorway.

Y2K fashion is experiencing a resurgence in recent years, with one prominent hallmark of the era including tracksuits, especially pink ones. The Bronx-born rapper fully embodied this aesthetic in the hours leading up to the release of her first album, set to drop at midnight on July 26.

Spotted outside the Empire State Building in midtown Manhattan, Ice Spice wore form-fitting light pink yoga pants which flared at the bottom, partially covering her sneakers; the set included a matching zip-up long sleeve top. The front of the shirt and the back of the pants read “Y2K” in black script, while black trim also accented the waistband of the pants and the bottom of the shirt.

The “Barbie World” rapper wore her hair in her signature shade of bright orange, sporting long wavy tresses that fell to her waist. Ice Spice further represented the Y2K era with a chunky silver chain necklace featuring a large butterfly centerpiece — butterflies are also closely associated with fashion of the 2000s.

Ice Spice rounded out the nostalgic pink and black color scheme with a coveted Nike sneaker, the Black Cat Air Jordan 4s. Drawing its moniker from a nickname for Michael Jordan, the shoes boast an all-black colorway and feature the Jordan 4’s distinctive silhouette and characteristics including “over-molded” mesh. Nike recently announced it will bring back the Black Cat colorway, blending new and classic features for the latest version of the shoe.

Katy Perry made a stylish appearance for her Capital Breakfast Radio interview in London on Thursday, turning heads with her fashion-forward ensemble. While her Balenciaga outfit showcased a unique blend of modern and vintage elements, it was her choice of footwear that stood new heights.

Perry opted for a pair of striking black pair of Vivienne Westwood knee-high platform boots from the brand’s Fall-Winter 2024/2025 collection that perfectly complemented her edgy look. These boots, featuring a dramatic chunky heel and pointed toe, are a nod to the early 2000s fashion trends, which have been making a significant comeback in recent years. The Y2K-inspired design of the boots adds a nostalgic touch, aligning with the current resurgence of early 2000s styles in both streetwear and high fashion.

These platform boots are a favorite among celebrities and stylists alike for their versatility and bold aesthetic. The style, originally popular in the late 90s and early 2000s, is known for its ability to add an element of drama to any outfit. Brands like Jeffrey Campbell, Gucci, and Steve Madden have been at the forefront of reintroducing these statement shoes.

The resurgence of platform boots can be attributed to the broader revival of Y2K fashion, which includes everything from low-rise jeans to neon colors and bold accessories. This trend is characterized by its playful and experimental nature, encouraging fashion enthusiasts to mix and match different styles to create unique looks.

This isn’t the first time the “Dark Horse” singer has stepped out in a look inspired by the early aughts. For the release of her first single and accompanying music video from her upcoming album “143.” In the “Woman’s World” video, which debuted July 11, Perry sings of female empowerment while she and her backup dancers revive the heeled Timberlands of the 2000s.

Proving fashion’s cyclical nature, Y2K styles are certainly trending again, and Juicy Couture remains a touchstone brand representative of the ’90s and aughts. In addition to velour tracksuits, symbols of the era include low-rise jeans, capris, baby tees, platforms and strappy sandals. Yara Shahidi recently channeled Y2K fashion at the album release party for her “Grown-ish” co-star Trevor Jackson, wearing an off-the-shoulder top with bell-bottom jeans that allowed her black pointed heels to peek out. Yara Shahidi Showcases How to Embrace the Peek-a-Boo Heel Trend in Y2K Style at Trevor Jackson’s Album Release https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/yara-shahidi-y2k-inspired-heels-trevor-jackson-album-1203665693/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 18:41:20 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203665693

Yara Shahidi made a fashionable appearance at Trevor Jackson’s “It’s Complicated” album release experience at Poppy on Tuesday. Stepping out to support her fellow “Grown-ish” co-star, Shahidi decided to pull a Y2K-inspired look.

“Peter Pan and Wendy” actress embraced a relaxed yet red carpet-appropriate look, opting for a one-shoulder black top and wide-leg jeans. She wore a pair of peek-a-boo black heels, which subtly peeked out from under the hem of her jeans, adding a touch of vintage flair to her modern ensemble.

Heels with oversized and wide-legged pants give a nod to the early 2000s fashion and are making a notable comeback.  The subtle appearance of the heel from under the jeans adds an element of intrigue and surprise to the overall look.

The resurgence of Y2K fashion has been evident both on the streets and on the red carpet. Celebrities like Ice Spice, Blackpink’s Jisoo and Camila Cabello have been gravitating towards styles that evoke nostalgia, seamlessly blending them with contemporary fashion elements. Shahidi’s choice of peek-a-boo heels reflects this trend, showcasing how vintage-inspired styling can elevate a modern outfit.

She showcased her love for vintage style last month by wearing Max Mara chunky heel strappy sandals to the luxury brand’s Resort 2025 show in Venice.

When it comes to picking footwear for the red carpet, Shahidi’s pumps frequently come from high-end brands such as Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, and Dior. Typically opting for neutral tones, these choices reflect Shahidi’s overall wardrobe preference. Occasionally, she opts for metallic styles, like the pair of disco boots she wore for a special screening of “Peter Pan & Wendy” at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York in April.

Paris Hilton Celebrates 20 Years of Motorola Razr in Sparkling Pumps and Y2K Style Versace Minidress https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/paris-hilton-shoes-motorola-house-of-razr-new-york-city-1203658519/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 21:13:09 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203658519 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

The early 2000s just called Paris Hilton — using a Motorola razr.

The OG influencer and pop singer wore a sequined minidress and paired it with glittering silver pumps at Motorola’s “House of razr Celebrates 20 Years of razr” event at the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in Brooklyn on June 25.

The OG influencer and pop singer wore wore Versace’s Crystal Medusa ’95 minidress, featuring ’95 hardware at the shoulders and crystal embellishments in a two-tone checkerboard pattern. She completed her look with glittering silver pumps. Adding to the disco ball-reminiscent outfit, Hilton wore sheer bedazzled fingerless gloves and oversized sunglasses with a white trim.

With the silhouette of a classic pointed pump, Hilton’s shoes combined materials and textures to create a two-toned look; the back and front of the shoe were a glittering silver while the sides were clear. The heels also featured a white trim above the transparent portion, adding a sharp outline to the look. The thin, glittery heel stood several inches off the ground.

Hilton recently wore another sparkling ensemble when she attended Alice + Olivia’s pride party earlier this month, arriving in an ombré dress and tall boots, both of which were rainbow colored and bedazzled. The reality star isn’t always channeling her early aughts style. She wore pumps with a long blue pleated dress at the launch of Ruggables x The Hiltons earlier in June.

The Motorola razr has been updated and modernized over the years to have all the functions of a smart phone — though it can still be satisfyingly flipped closed. While the 2024 razr has just been announced, the phone still evokes the pre-iPhone era when texting happened on a physical keyboard and Paris Hilton was wearing lowrise jeans, tracksuits and lots of eye-catching shoes.

Puma Launches the Spirex to Hop on the Y2K Running Sneaker Trend https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/puma-spirex-release-date-february-2024-1203589923/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 18:27:18 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203589923 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

The Y2K running sneaker craze is getting a new participant, as Puma has announced the new Spirex silhouette.

Taking inspiration from track spikes in the early-aughts, this brand-new design is intended for everyday wear. A mix of mesh, nubuck and suede — a hallmark of 2000s running shoes — form an asymmetrical upper with a Formstrip taking on a gridded, futuristic appearance. Down low, an IMEVA foam midsole sits above of an aggressively lugged outsole.

For its launch, the Spirex arrives in two monomochrome colorways, “Prairie Tan” and “Grey Fog.”

Y2K running shoes have been one of the dominant trends in sneakers for the past several years and may only get more popular in 2024. New Balance has been the proliferator of the trend with a robust catalog of archival models that have helped put the company back on the map among sneaker enthusiasts. Nike’s also had success with its Zoom Vomero 5 and is bringing back a number of old models for the first time this year.

Also born of the same era but originating in the lifestyle space, Puma’s Mostro has also been tapped for a major come back in 2024.

The Puma Spirex is out as of Monday through Puma’s website, physical stores and select third-party retailers. Pricing is set at $150.

Jessica Simpson on the Y2K Fashion Moments That Defined Her Career https://footwearnews.com/fashion/celebrity-style/jessica-simpson-2000s-fashion-1203563676/ Tue, 05 Dec 2023 21:02:10 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203563676

Pop culture’s current obsession with all things Y2K is nothing new — but it also shows no signs of slowing down. And as more fans look back on Jessica Simpson’s twenty-plus years in the spotlight, from pop princess and reality TV pioneer to footwear mogul and 2023 FNAA Icon Award winner, they are also discovering just how influential the star’s Y2K fashion moments were, then and now.

“I honestly keep everything — too many things,” said Simpson, on the set of her FN cover shoot to celebrate the award. “I feel like Y2K will always come back.”

The star admits that she has not one but two storage units that contain her looks from over the years. Not only has she kept most everything from her career — she also remembers all of the details of where and when she wore the looks.

“I just went back and grabbed stuff. And of course I have to tell everybody everything. ‘And this is what I wore when I went to the bathroom in New York, this one time when this paparazzi tripped,'” the star joked. “I remember the stupidest details of everything. But they all have a story. Maybe I should write it down and do a fashion book or something. You never know.”

Here, Simpson breaks down eight of her most memorable looks from the height of her pop career, which also happened to coincide with the Y2K era’s peak fashion years.

2003 – Michael Kors Runway Show at New York Fashion Week

“I loved it so much because I didn’t have to wear a bra and it was very fashion for me at 23 years old,” said Simpson. “That’s when I actually met Michael Kors and he was so kind and generous to me. He let me take the dress home. It was in my closet until I got pregnant with Maxwell, and I never thought I would lose the weight to wear it again. I actually want it back! I wish I hadn’t given it away!”

2004 – The Reality Tour

“This dress was made by Roberto Cavalli, a very dear friend of mine. He really knew how to dress my body especially for stage. By the end of the tour I was spilling out of this dress and it broke in multiple places, but it hung in all summer somehow. I do still have it, it’s in storage.”

“This is styled by Rachel Zoe, it’s a Valentino dress. I love the metallic, anything bold but also sophisticated. I loved wearing the short hair with it, I felt like I was giving off a different vibe than most people do at the VMAs.”

2005 – “Dukes of Hazzard” Premiere

2005 – Out in New York City

“I was in my element. I am a jeans girl so if I can dress up jeans in any way, it’s going to be with a corset and a BIG flower. I do still have it. This is a good one to keep.”

2005 – ESPY Awards

This is probably one of my all-time favorite dresses. It is just the most classic dress. I had never worn anything fit and flare before. I love the yellow and the cream, it’s Oscar de la Renta. I remember I could hardly breathe. My favorite part is the accessory – the corsage.”

2005 – MTV Video Music Awards

“This was a big year for me. It’s not really a VMAs look. A lot of people don’t wear shorts. But I was Daisy Duke, so I wore shorts. And it was very scandalous because you could see my lace bra. And now it’s so normal. This is a Y2K top. I don’t know if I still have it. Would I wear it again today? Probably, but not with shorts.”

2006 – Performance for “A Public Affair”

“This was press for my last pop record that I did. I had short hair, I just chopped it all off. I was going through a divorce and I just said take it all off. I just wanted to wear something that was comfortable. I love the color. And then I wore a Jessica Simpson Collection boot. 2006 was a big boot moment, that’s when we started launching a lot of things with the brand. I do still have these boots. I just thought it was fun that you could fold them over. Maybe that will come back one day, but it’s a little Renaissance or something.”

Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat Returns With Y2K Velour, Corsets & More for Fall 2023 https://footwearnews.com/fashion/fashion-news/baby-phat-kimora-lee-simmons-fall-2023-collection-1203535942/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 17:49:50 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203535942

Baby Phat is officially back, marking its new debut with a velour-packed collection — all designed by none other than founder Kimora Lee Simmons.

“This drop is a celebration of an era that left an indelible mark on fashion history,” Simmons said of the collection in a brand statement. “The cross-generational love of individuality and self-expression represents the timeless nature of the early 2000s. That era’s continued impact continues to delight consumers and I know they’ll find themselves in the spirit of these pieces.”

The Y2K label’s relaunch for its new fall 2023 collection, which retails from $40 to $100, strongly leans into that signature era — where the brand was beloved by stars including Paris Hilton, Cam’ron and Lil’Kim, among others. Available online now, Baby Phat’s new offerings include pale pink and black velour tracksuits covered in its signature debossed cat logo, as well as separates like crop tops, tube tops and miniskirts.

The brand is also notably highlighting its size inclusivity in its relaunch since Simmons regained sole ownership of it in 2019, with pieces available in sizes XS to XXL. The first velour drop particularly takes center stage in its new campaign, where a variety of models pose in the separates — all accented by pieces like fluffy heels, pointed mules and ombré sunglasses in the same glamorous spirit as the early 2000s.

As for the future, Simmons is continuing to champion the Y2K revival in Baby Phat’s upcoming “’99 Classics” line. In its future drop-style offerings, which can now be pre-ordered online, the label will bring back its famed line of denim with logo-branded back pockets. Additional pieces include cargo pants, corset tops and baby tees in similar black, white and pink color palettes.
