The sun is setting on Vasque, but not before releasing one more boot to keep outdoor enthusiasts out on the trail.

Available now is the Horizon, a boot Vasque stated was designed for casual hikers who want athletic-inspired comfort “without sacrificing traditional trail protection.” Vasque created the boot with low and mid heights, and is available in both women’s and men’s sizing.

Vasque built the Horizon with sustainable materials, including 60 percent recycled content in the heel counters and 50 percent recycled linings. Also, the boot’s energy-returning EVA midsoles are made with 20 percent sugarcane.

The boots also feature waterproof nubuck leather upper, as well as the brand’s VasqueDry waterproofing technology, durable rubber outsoles, comfort-focused open-cell PU insoles and reflective details for added visibility.

The Vasque Horizon is available now in a low for $130 and a mid for $140 via Vasque.com. Once the Vasque website shutters, the boots will be available via the Irish Setter website.

Red Wing Shoe Co. confirmed via email with FN on Oct. 11 that it immediately stop new product development, marketing and purchasing for Vasque. Also, it stated any open orders scheduled to ship before January 2025 will be fulfilled, and all spring 2025 orders will be cancelled.

“What consumers seek and how they want to both shop and buy has changed dramatically,” a statement from Red Wing Shoe Co. emailed to FN read. “These changes have forced us to re-evaluate our business proposition and opportunity.”

The statement continued, “This is not a decision that we took lightly. In fact, we evaluated many possible strategic paths. In the end, however, we do not believe that there is a viable path forward. With limited resources, we believe it is best for us to focus on the incredible opportunities we see in our core business and brands at Red Wing Shoe Company.”

Crocs Classic Clogs launched over 20 years ago and remain the brand’s all-time best-seller. The style reigns in Footwear News’ Greatest Shoes of All Time ranking for its unique ability to serve as “one of fashion’s greatest canvases for coolness, creativity, self-expression, and even the runway.” It also earned the honor of Footwear News’ 2021 Shoe Of The Year after a period of impressive momentum through buzzy collaborations that appealed to all ages across the globe. Crocs CEO Andrew Rees told Footwear News that the Classic Clog “represents a celebration of individuality — something we stand for as a brand and a theme we inspire our consumers and customers to embrace.”

The new Pokémon Classic Clog collection is no different and follows several successful collaborations of the past year that cater to a wide range of interests and style perspectives. Pop culture iterations of the shoe are among the most popular, from Batman Crocs, to Spongebob Squarepants clogs, and the sold-out Hello Kitty Classic Clog collection. The Crocs Classic Clog is also embraced by high-fashion designers, like Simone Rocha‘s charm-studded take on three new designs of the shoe last spring or, most recently, in Ancuța Sarca’s London Fashion Week presentation with metallic adornments and gradient soles. Crocs’ Pokémon Classic Clogs will likely sell out soon after today’s launch, so be sure to secure a pair or two before they’re gone for good.

How to Clean White Sneakers & Keep Them Looking Fresh: Leather, Canvas, Suede and More Styles https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/how-to-clean-white-shoes-1202541982/ https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/how-to-clean-white-shoes-1202541982/#comments Tue, 08 Oct 2024 14:21:00 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1202541982

As we roll into the colder months, it’s time to make sure we cleanse our white sneakers from all they were put through during the summer time. While brands like Golden Goose have gained a massive following by selling shoes that look worn-in and scuffed up, anyone who truly loves sneakers knows they should be kept looking like they are fresh out of the box for as long as possible.

As cool as white sneakers look with just about any outfit, they can also be a pain to keep looking clean. Every grass or dirt stain is easily visible on a white fabric, and keeping them crisp is no easy feat — especially if you want to avoid dousing your kicks in harmful chemicals. And the way to treat your sneakers also all depends on what material they are made out of.

Read below for our step by step guides on how to keep your white sneakers clean and expand their lifespan in your wardrobe.

How to clean white sneakers

In order to keep your white sneakers looking fresh, the organic way, follow the steps outlined below. Keep in mind that this process varies for leather, canvas or suede kicks.

How to organically clean white leather sneakers

  • Step 1: Mix two teaspoons of organic pure castile soap with 1/4 cup of water. You can purchase a 16-oz. bottle of castile soap for around $10 at Target.
  • Step 2: Dip a (clean) toothbrush into the soap-water mixture.
  • Step 3: Scrub the white leather parts of the shoe gently and thoroughly with your toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush back in the mixture as many times as you need to — you’ll probably need to do this a lot. Be careful not to scrub into the laces or other delicate fabrics.
  • Step 4: Clean the hardware, plastic and rubber portions of your sneakers as necessary.
  • Step 5: Wipe off your white sneakers with a clean towel, and voila, you’re done.

How to clean white mesh sneakers

Athletic sneaker styles are a popular shoe choice for the spring and summer months — especially white sneakers with mesh uppers, making them breathable and lightweight. However, whether you’re wearing them for workouts or fashion statements, the knit pair’s textures can often attract dirt and quickly become stained. Below, we outlined how to clean white sneakers when they feature mesh uppers, seen in styles from brands like Adidas, APL or Allbirds.

  • Fill a bucket with hot water.
  • Dip a cloth into the water, and scrub dirt off of your sneakers’ rubber soles and outsoles with the now-damp cloth.
  • Put 1-2 scoops of powdered OxiClean detergent into the water.
  • Drop both shoes fully into the bucket.
  • Put a heavy object on top of the bucket, such as a large heavy shelf or bowl, to keep the shoes submerged for 4-6 hours; if dirtier, soak 8-12 hours.
  • Place the sneakers in the washing machine, and let them run for a full “heavy duty” or “normal” cycle with cold water.
  • Remove your mesh sneakers from washing machine, and let them air dry.

You can watch this process visually on YouTube, as well — as seen here by creator Faith Mancuso, who’s estimated to have washed her white Adidas sneakers at least 50 times.

How to clean white canvas sneakers

Canvas sneakers are another popular style choice from their lightweight material and casual nature. As seen from brands like Converse, Cariuma and Superga, monochrome styles frequently feature lace-up or slip-on uppers atop flat matching rubber soles. However, these also need maintenance to prevent fabric staining — which we’ll outline, below.

converse sneakers, white, canvas
White Converse sneakers.

  • Step 1: Untie and remove your sneakers’ shoelaces.
  • Step 2: Knock the shoes’ bottoms together to dislodge any large bits of dirt from their crevices.
  • Step 3: Use a dry comb or toothbrush to brush loose dirt off of the shoes’ canvas uppers, as well as its tongues and soles.
  • Step 4: Mix two tablespoons of vinegar with a tablespoon of baking soda, then dilute the mixture with one cup of worm water.
  • Step 5: Dip a washcloth or toothbrush into the baking soda-vinegar paste, then scrub your shoes with it in small, circular motions.
  • Step 6: Once the mixture dries, brush it off of your shoes’ uppers and let them air dry.

How to clean white suede sneakers

The final shoe style that’s most popular is suede, favored again for its light hue and weight. The faintly textured material can become dirty just like mesh, canvas or leather, but we’ll outline how to clean white sneakers with this unique material below.

  • Step 1: Take a clean cloth and wet one of tis corners with a small amount of suede cleaner. If you don’t own suede cleaner, rubbing alcohol or white vinegar will also suffice.
  • Step 2: Use the damp cloth to dab, or massage, the shoe’s suede pieces using horizontal or vertical side-to-side motions.
  • Step 3: Set the suede sneakers aside, allowing them to air dry.

How to keep rubber soles clean

Many white sneakers featured flat white rubber soles, which can be easily stained and cake dirt into their textured bases. To clean these, you can use a melamine sponge — such as the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. First, scrub off any scuff marks with the dry sponge, then use water to wet its tip and scrub the sides of your soles again. To finish the process, wipe off the shoes with a damp paper towel or other cloth, then allow them to air dry — your clean white shoes will now have an equally clean base.

How to keep white shoelaces clean

Another sneaker element that needs maintenance are your laces. The thin fabric closures often receive the brunt of our activities, and can easily become streaked and worn out. A simple fix is to wash them with bleach. While wearing gloves for your safety, remove the laces from your white sneakers and place them in a mesh bag. Submerge the bag in a small container or dish; the Clorox website recommends using 3 tablespoons of bleach per gallon of water. Once the laces are soaked, they can be washed with regular laundry detergent in the washing machine. Finally, let the laces air dry before stringing them back into your sneakers.

How to Clean White Sneakers with Lemon Juice

Because of its acidity, lemon juice can be a great way to clean your white shoes without leaving the house. The fruit’s lightening properties are able to break down dirt and debris that is making a pair of white shoes look discolored. Keep in mind that this method can only be used when dealing with canvas sneakers. It should never be used on any other silhouette, especially leather or suede as it will damage the material.

  • Step 1: Soak the shoes in water until they are completely saturated.
  • Step 2: After squeezing the lemon juice into a container, measure the amount. Then, add an equal amount of water to create a 1-to-1 solution.
  • Step 3: After mixing both liquids together, use a clean cloth or toothbrush to apply the juice onto the shoes. Scrub the solution into the material, or desired area, in a circular motion.
  • Step 4: After you’ve finished, let the shoes dry in direct sunlight for at least an hour.
  • Step 5: Rinse the mixture off the shoes with clean water.

How to Clean White Sneakers with Micellar Water

Although many are familiar with micellar water as a toner or makeup remover, the skincare product can also be used to clean white shoes. The solution is infused with tiny particles called micelles that lift and soak up dirt and oil like a sponge, making it a great option for someone trying to clean their dirty white shoes. Because it is formulated for the skin, the formula is gentle enough to be used on several materials, including leather. Just like it is used within a skin-prepping routine, the fix does not involve water or rinsing.

  • Step 1: Pour micellar water onto a clean cloth and gently rub the solution into the upper or wherever the product is needed.
  • Step 2: Continue to do this for a few minutes and you will begin to see a difference as the dirt or stain will lift off the shoes.
  • Step 3: Let the shoes air-dry. If there are tough stains, you can repeat the process again.

Red Wing Heritage Is Stitching Tiny Wills Into Its Boots With Its “Will Your Wings” Campaign https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/red-wing-heritage-will-your-wings-campaign-1203693537/ Wed, 02 Oct 2024 16:59:37 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203693537 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

In a world of disposable, fast fashion trends, Red Wing Heritage is making an effort to encourage customers to keep their boots for years to later be passed on the next generation of wearers by offering tiny wills to be stitched into boot tongues.

Launching on Oct. 2 as part of the brand’s “Will Your Wings” campaign, a tiny will with “Worn By” and “Left To” fields can be stitched into customers’ boot tongues, as a space to designate who will be next heir to the ever-reliable shoe.

Customers will receive a free Will Your Wings tag in-store or with any purchase online. Global flagship stores in Tokyo, Paris and Red Wing, Minn., as well as select retail stores around the world including Philadelphia, Austin and Toronto will also be hosting stitching events for customers to have their Will Your Wings tags sewn in on-site by store associates.

“That’s what Will Your Wings is all about,” the company states. “Cherishing family heirlooms, giving great product the fullest and longest life cycle possible, and celebrating the personal stories and years of artful patina created with each pair of Red Wing boots.”

Similar as the company’s Out of Fashion campaign, Red Wing’s Will Your Wings celebrates a commitment to high-quality, handcrafted product that’s built to last and gets even better the more you wear it. As part of that commitment, Red Wing’s repair shop in Minnesota refreshes, re-soles and reconditions upwards of 40,000 boots each year, ultimately diverting 54 tons from landfills.

Red Wing shared that over the years, several customers have shared their stories about their boots being handed down over 50+ years, with some even “willing their Wings” back to the company after years of love and wear to be retired in the corporate archives.

The statement from the company about the campaign says that in a single year, the average American throws away 81.5 pounds of clothing and shoes, which amounts to an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste across the country annually.

Cat Footwear Releases an Oversized New Work Boot That Was Designed With ‘Streetwear Flair’ https://footwearnews.com/shoes/outdoor-footwear/cat-footwear-invader-max-work-boot-release-date-1203693358/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 18:26:26 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203693358 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Cat Footwear has added an oversized work boot to its acclaimed Invader franchise.

Available now is the Invader Max, a look the brand explained was inspired by Caterpillar Inc.’s “heavy-duty machinery” and was designed “to dominate any terrain.” Cat Footwear further stated the Invader Max is “the ultimate fusion of bold style, comfort and protection.”

Cat Footwear Invader Max
Cat Footwear Invader Max.

To create the Invader Max, Cat Footwear explained it paired the “strength of an earthmover” with the “agility of a sneaker.” It features a composite safety toe for protection, as well as tire tread-inspired outsoles with slip resistant technology that wraps up the heel, toe and arch, which was added to reduce risk of slips on the job. It is also built with contoured EVA midsoles for comfort and protection, and is waterproof to keep the wearer’s feet dry in wet conditions.

In terms of aesthetics, Cat Footwear stated the Invader Max was designed with “streetwear flair” in part to its overbuilt hardware, chunky outsoles and distinct branding on the tongue. The boot, according to the brand, is something that should appeal to construction workers, mechanics and those hanging out in New York City’s Lower East Side neighborhood.

“Our team set out on a mission to create a work boot that redefines the industry standard — not just pushing boundaries, but completely shattering them,” Cat Footwear brand marketing manager Michael Boss said in a statement. “The Invader Max truly embodies this vision. With its bold design and robust protective features, it stands out as a work boot ready to tackle any challenge.”

The Cat Footwear Invader Max is now available via Catfootwear.com and retails for $165. There are three colorways that can be shopped now: Coffee Bean, Black and Gargoyle.
