If you want to get technical, this isn’t Rihanna’s first go-round with the Puma brand.

First partnering with the brand in 2014 as a brand ambassador and creative director, the entertainment mogul began releasing collections under the Fenty x Puma moniker in 2016. While she eventually departed in 2018 to become a major entrepreneur with her own brands, it was announced in March 2023 by the brand’s CEO Arne Freundt that the two were teaming up once again to revive their incredibly impressive successful partnership. 

The superstar gave an exclusive to Senior Editor Nikara Johns for the Footwear News September 2023 issue to discuss the vision for her then-upcoming soccer-inspired collection, which was a fresh take on the classic Puma Avanti. “Football is a universal language that brings people together from all over the world, all walks of life, and I wanted to pay homage to that,” she told Johns, with Bob Philion, president and CEO of Puma North America, adding: “She moves culture, sets trends and she certainly can move our business. Fenty is stronger now than it was when she was with us before.”

Now, a little over one year later, the two are back with another collection that channels her “soccer mom” era. For this latest release of the The Fenty x Puma Avanti sneakers, Rihanna hosted a press conference in Los Angeles to unveil her latest creation, choosing young influencers Jazlyn “Jazzy” Guerra, Bowie Layne Barcena, twins Alexis and Ava McClure, Jabria McCullum to serve as journalists. 

In a video captured of the interview, she revealed that it’s her childhood that inspired her to work with Puma (and that her favorite snack is french fries as well).

“Fenty x Puma is actually very connected to my home culture because soccer is a big deal in our culture in Barbados. I’ve always looked up to the Puma brand because I always wanted to own a pair of sneakers…it was one of the first sneakers I bought as a child,” she told one kid reporter.

“It’s like coming home,” she added. 

“I don’t think I have a favorite team,” she explained when asked by another young journo. “When my brother and I were younger, we used to love watching Ronaldinho—we thought Brazil was our team. For me, incorporating fashion and sport—you get to reimagine something that is traditional—something that you’ve seen done the same way. There’s so many ways you can reimagine and get creative, and that is the thing I challenge myself with when I am designing with Puma.”

The “ANTI” artist also added that “when you have fun, the experience becomes a memory,” and that “everyone should be able to rock whatever they want, whatever they want to…that’s the Rihanna way.”

With football as her inspiration, Rihanna redefines the concept of “Soccer Mom” by blending fashion, sportiness, and comfort effortlessly. The striking new colorways of the Fenty x Puma Avantis are now available for purchase at Puma.com, offering a fresh take on athletic footwear.

Drawing inspiration from football legends, the Avanti style is an elevated take on classic sneakers. It features premium leather, touches of gold, and retro gum soles. Romeo Beckham and many others have been spotted wearing this Fenty x Puma sneaker in the latest campaign. The design also showcases a soft leather upper, attached fold-over tongue in leather, lace closure, brown leather lining, EVA foam wedge midsole, gum outsole and Fenty x Puma co-branding details.

They often coordinate their outfits, making memorable impressions with both their street style and red carpet style. Of course, the multi-hyphenates, who both work alongside Puma, don’t disappoint when it comes down to footwear. Look ahead for some of their striking shoe moments displayed over the past few years.

Rihanna was one of more than 8,000 guests at Moncler’s The City of Genius event held in Shanghai, China over the weekend — but she was still easy to spot in a glossy red catsuit and sharp black heels.

Rihanna modeled one of her partner A$AP Rocky‘s creations made in collaboration with Moncler. The superstar looked fierce as ever in a skin-tight shiny jumpsuit in a captivating cardinal red hue. The one-piece garment featured a zipper in front and a mock neck collar; keeping with the rosy color scheme, she modeled an off-the-shoulder look with a puffer layer, a nod to Moncler’s signature item.

With her hair piled atop her head, she accented the catsuit with a matching red lip, oversized sunglasses and a single-strand diamond necklace. Both catsuit and puffer featured the logo for AWGE, A$AP Rocky’s creative agency. Stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn were responsible for her look.

A bold heel seemed the natural choice to complement Rihanna’s daring outfit. The superstar changed up the color scheme with a pair of black patent leather heels; the shoes featured a super sharp elongated pointed toe and an upper with an oval-shaped outline. The back portion, or quarter of the shoe, covered some of the heel but was notably cut slightly lower than that of the typical black pump.

While this mule-adjacent silhouette made the shoe stand out, other classic features included a sloped sole and a stiletto heel. The style strongly resembled Amina Muaddi’s forthcoming Anok Mule, which Rihanna herself debuted in September in a shade referred to as “custom butter satin.”

At Selfridges in London last month, she paired the gold shoe with an off-the-shoulder robe-inspired dress made of a fuzzy fabric. Now in October, she could very well be modeling the style in another colorway — especially with her heels bearing the peach outsole and interlocking “AM” logo of the brand.

Rihanna has been in the mood for red lately. Alongside Puma, the entrepreneur recently released the newest colorway of the Fenty x Puma Avanti sneaker, with this version known as Club Red.

The makeup mogul is known for her fashion sense, and designers often give her the first pick of their latest designs. Earlier this month when celebrating the rapper’s birthday, she wore an updated version of Gianvito Rossi‘s Montecarlo style. The Montecarlo silhouette was released previously by Gianvito Rossi, but Rihanna’s version is from the brand’s resort 2025 collection and won’t be in stores for a few months and she was seemingly the first celebrity spotted wearing the design.

The newest version of Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma Avanti sneaker, which the artist and entrepreneur teased multiple times over the last several months, released at long last on Oct. 17. The new colorway called Club Red can now be purchased from Puma.com, the Puma app, Puma stores and retailers globally.

The creative campaign features Romeo Beckham, the 22-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham, wearing the shoe with jeans and a tank top.

Rihanna herself recently modeled the shoes with a slouchy gray suit. As ever, the Fenty CEO looked effortlessly stylish — her ensemble incorporated athletic elements into a business formal silhouette for an easygoing but chic aesthetic. She wore a high-waisted wide-leg trousers and a blazer in a stone gray hue with a green and white striped soccer jersey. She previously modeled the sneaker over the summer, when she wore the new colorway to a soccer game between Manchester United and AC Milan.

In addition to a red backdrop and white Formstrip, the Club Red Avanti features gold Fenty x Puma branding, adding a subtle flash to the design. The upper features oil-treated leather and a lace closure in addition to the identifiable fold-over tongue. The shoe is marked at a price of $150 and will be offered for all ages.

The Fenty x Puma Avanti was showcased in an FN cover story in September 2023, when Footwear News was allowed an exclusive first look at the campaign. Rihanna told FN, “Football is a universal language that brings people together from all over the world, all walks of life, and I wanted to pay homage to that.”

The Puma Avanti dates back to 2001; the style took inspiration from the 1998 Jil Sander King sneaker, which combines elements of the 1978 running sneaker Easy Rider and the 1968 king football boot. Since their first collaboration on the Avanti model in 2023, Puma and Rihanna have dropped several colorways including black and white, chrome, Dark Myrtle, Club Navy, and pony-inspired options made of calf hair.

Rihanna celebrated the launch of Savage X Fenty Lavish Lace at Nordstrom Century City held on Oct. 10 in Los Angeles.

The “Diamonds” songstress flattered her feet in a pair of glitzy Saint Laurent Liz satin crepe rhinestone mules. Retailing for $1,750, the designer pair featured almond-shaped toes, crisscrossing straps chocolate brown satin uppers and crystalized appliques that gave the shoe an undeniable shine. Geometric 4.3-inch heels rounded out the set, diversifying the silhouette.

The sculptural heel has become an unofficial trademark for Saint Laurent, seen on many of their recent footwear creations. Rihanna’s footwear pick is nostalgic, harkening back to popular mule styles from the 2000s and early 90s.

Beyond the welcomed shine of the crystalized detailing, the chocolate brown uppers acted to ground the silhouette, giving it a wearable feel. Not to mention the satin sheen mirrored the applique’s shimmer. Similar mules to the performer’s own can be found via top brands like Prada, Zara, Saint Laurent and Gainvito Rossi, among others.

All cozied up, the “Umbrella” singer layered on a brown and red Fendi curly lamb shaggy coat paired with a matching brown lace corset slip hailing from her very own Savage x Fenty. Worn beneath her dress, Rihanna sported lace camo tights, also from Savage x Fenty.

The neutral tones found throughout her look complimented her footwear choice. Rihanna’s ensemble was quintessential fall, marrying comfort and style perfectly.

For Rihanna, no shoe is too bold — or heel too high. The “Rated R” musician has worn many shoes over the years, including sky-high heels and chunky sneakers. Rihanna’s red carpet styles often include strappy sandals, platforms and pointed-toe pumps by Amina Muaddi, Prada and Tom Ford that coordinate with her outfits. ASAP Rocky celebrated his 36th birthday with Rihanna while in New York yesterday.

Going preppy, the “Sundress” rapper sported a pair of black Bottega Veneta Strut derby shoes. Retailing for $1,250, the silhouette included lush black leather uppers, lace-up closures, short stacked heels, rounded toes and unique braided leather welt in black. Leather backstay pull tabs and leather outsoles rounded out the all-black set, offering the silhouette lots of utilitarian details that made for easy on and off and a non-slip feel respectively.

The designer brand’s Strut derby shoe is a popular silhouette, especially among male celebrities. Sophisticated and sleek, the lush style, and many like it, elevate any ensemble paired with it. The Row, Ralph Lauren, Dior, Prada and Saint Laurent all feature similar silhouettes to Rocky’s Bottega pick for the special night. The designer shoe can be likened to Oxford styles given its formal nature and lace-up closures.

The birthday boy paired his derby footwear with an equally stylish suiting moment in plaid. The footwear is a sandal. The base is a leopard-printed velvet, which is new for the Montecarlo, with a pointed toe. It also sports a stiletto heel of just over four inches. Otherwise, the shoe is in-line with the strappy sandal trend that has been picking up on red carpets and in celebrity dressing: it sports a crystal embellished strap across the foot as well as a crystal embellished bow tie ankle strap.

The rest of the Gianvito Rossi resort 2025 collection incorporates various trending silhouettes — there is an open-toe mule, a slingback, a second-skin boot, as well as a short Western-cut boot — featuring crystal embellishment as well as leopard-printed velvet. Rossi has also been a go-to brand as of late for celebrities, dressing quite a number of them over the past three months.

Amina Muaddi tapped none other than Rihanna to debut shoes from her upcoming collection, Drop 24/25. Muaddi took to social media to share snaps of the superstar wearing a shiny gold heel called the Anok mule.

Rihanna was in London on Sept. 16 attending a launch party for her new Fenty Hair line held at Selfridges. As to be expected, the entrepreneur made a major fashion statement in a cream colored off-the-shoulder dress from Jacquemus, which seemed to combine the sensibilities of a robe, trench coat and dress.

Made of a thick and fuzzy material, Rihanna looked cozy but fierce; the garment narrowed at the waist where belt-like pieces of fabric hung. The coat also featured a significant slit that allowed her legs to be seen and contributed to the robe aesthetic. The top portion folded over to create an elegant layered look exposing the musician’s shoulders.

Muaddi described Rihanna’s Anok mule as “custom butter satin.” The glossy light gold tone complemented her Jacquemus coat, which was also a buttery hue. The shoe featured a dramatically pointed toe which contrasted the curved outline of the upper. The vamp lowered significantly along the side and led to the back portion which didn’t quite cover the heel, thus Muaddi designating the shoe as a mule. The designer did not mention a specific date but wrote that Drop 24/25 is “soon to be released.”

Rihanna’s talents have global reach, so it’s no surprise that she was in London not long after her appearance at New York Fashion Week. She attended Alaïa’s spring 2025 show at the Guggenheim this September wearing a sheer dress and pearl-adorned gladiator-style sandals.
