If you have high arches, finding the most supportive walking shoes for your foot shape can help support you with every step you take — and prevent serious discomfort. “Typically, high arches cause pain,” says explains London-based celebrity podiatrist Marion Yau. “As a result, the heel and toes of your foot are under extra stress since the sole of your foot doesn’t provide much support. Runners and walkers may find it difficult to cope with the added stress.” That’s why it’s essential to own walking shoes that are specifically designed with arch and joint support in mind, with key features like generous cushioning, supportive insoles, and a roomy toe box.

High arches are the opposite of flat feet — those with high arches have more lift in the middle of their foot. “Our foot’s arch plays an important role in running and walking, maintaining balance, absorbing shock, and adapting to different surfaces,” explains Yau, adding that “there are some people who are born with high arches in their feet, and there are others who have medical conditions that contribute to their high arches.”

To determine whether or not you have high arches, Yau suggests a handy at-home test: “Using a piece of paper or concrete, wet your feet and stand on the surface,” she says. “Look at the imprint left behind after you move your feet. An individual with high arches will only see an imprint of their heel and front of their foot.” If that’s your result, you’re far from alone — the Cleveland Clinic estimates that about 20 percent of adults have high-arched feet.

High arches can make you more prone to a range of health conditions, according to Yau, such as metatarsalgia, plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, bunions, ankle instability, corns, or calluses. You may also have a tendency to supinate, which means that you place more weight on the outside of your foot while walking. For these reasons, we’ve included the best shoes for plantar fasciitis, the best shoes for bunions, and the best ankle support shoes on our list for all-around support for multiple concerns.

To find the best walking shoes for high arches, we consulted top experts. In addition to Yau, we also interviewed Dr. Emily Spichal, a podiatrist and founder of Naboso, as well as Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, a podiatrist and member of the Vionic Innovation Lab.

Editors’ Choice: Top 3 Walking Shoes for High Arches of 2024

Footwear News Shop editors routinely research the best shoes for the range of common foot types and concerns by enlisting invaluable podiatrist insight, riding the pulse of innovative shoe releases, and even learning first-hand as we treat pesky strain in our own high-arched feet. Our selections in this roundup of the best walking shoes for high arches is a result of comprehensive footwear market research, which includes pinpointing top brands that offer the best underfoot cushioning, arch support, and comfortable materials, as well as durable outsole traction and responsive midsoles that allow optimal energy return, no matter the terrain you roam.

While walking shoes for high arches require key supportive elements, they also come in a variety of styles that serve different functions. For this reason, our editors curated our top three options that represent a range of price points, style preferences, and comfort features. Each sneaker was rated on a checklist of essential criteria, such as arch support, cushioned comfort, durability, and versatile style.

  • Nike Motiva Walking Shoes: Nike’s Motiva shoe comes highly recommended by one Footwear News Shop editor with high arches for its plush cushioning support and strain relief. Its cool, modern design gives more flair than a typical performance sneaker, all while boasting key elements that make for a superb walking shoe for high arches, such as a rocker heel, sock-absorption technology, padded collar, and a wide, roomy fit.
  • Salomon Xt-6 Sneakers: The Salomon Xt-6 sneakers are a stylish, ultra-supportive walking sneaker for those with high arches. Durable traction provides stable footing on slick surfaces (they are technically trail-running shoes), while a deep heel cup and contoured insole hug the foot. One Footwear News editor with high arches and frequent bouts of plantar fasciitis swears by them.
  • adidas Ultraboost 5X Sneakers: These top adidas walking shoes pair arch support with impressive energy return. Cushioned but not too heavy, the new Ultraboost 5X sneakers are an excellent choice for those who favor power walks, or someone in need of an everyday sneaker for both walking and running.

Nike Motiva Walking Shoes
Size range: 6 to 15 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Colorways:
Black, red, blue, white, pink, and more
Materials: Recycled plastic, rubber
Special features:
Comfortgroove outsole; 1/2-inner sleeve; waterfall collar
The Motiva walking shoe was one of Nike’s top releases of 2023, and pose as an ideal everyday sneaker for hours-long foot support. The shoe’s shining feature is its exaggerated Comfortgroove rocker outsole that aids in super smooth transitions and practically effortless strides. You can rely on ultra-cushioned landings in these shoes, which are specially designed for shock absorption and all-around soft support, from a padded foam collar and heel, to an inner sleeve that reduces friction on your feet. Motiva’s wide-set footbed makes it a superb shoe for wide feet as well, and its breathable mesh upper will keep you feeling — and looking — cool.

Editor testing and review notes: “Upon a long walk with my dog wearing the Motiva shoes, I realized that for the first time in a long time, I didn’t experience a moment of discomfort while maintaining stability on the varying terrains. My podiatrist explained that the Motiva is a great walking shoe for my feet for its higher heel-to-toe drop and rocker bottom, which prevents any strain on my high arches, especially as a fast-walking heel striker. (Thanks to years of wearing fancy dress shoes on a daily basis, I suffer from mild plantar fasciitis.) Though I have borderline neutral-width feet, I was also happy with the roomy toe box that’s less common in Nike sneaker styles.” — Footwear News Director of Commerce Adam Mansuroglu

What testers say: “I’ve owned what feels like hundreds of Nike shoes and these by far are the best for overall design and maximum comfort! In my opinion everyone should try out these incredible shoes. Whoever designed these shoes deserves an award.”

Colorways:
Over 15 available
Materials: EVA cushioning, TPU film and mesh upper, high-traction Contagrip tread
Special features: Toggle lacing system; Agile Chassis System provides extra stability
Before the Salomon Xt-6 Sneakers were adopted by trendsetters like Emily Ratajkowski, Lily Collins, and Sophie Turner, these shoes were considered the gold standard for tackling tough terrain in harsh weather. And while they make pretty flawless trail running shoes, our editors recommend them for long walks on city streets, too — particularly for those with problematic feet. The Salomon Xt-6 shoes have a deep heel cup that’s essential for keeping those with high arches in proper alignment. If you like to feel like your feet are being cradled from the ground up, these are the walking shoes for high arches to reach for.

One major pro to the Salomon Xt-6 sneakers is their durability. The outsole provides traction to take you from rocky trails to slick pavement safely, while reinforcement near the toe keeps your feet protected on rough hikes.

Editor testing and review notes: “My Salomon sneakers are the best investment I’ve made for my foot health, hands down. I was initially drawn to the ‘gorpcore’ style of the shoes, but it’s the comfort that keeps me coming back. I have such high arches that my midfoot rarely makes contact with the insole of the shoe, however these sneakers have a deep heel cup that allows my entire foot to fall in place. They’ve become my go to walking shoes when I’m embarking on a long stroll in New York City, and they’re my go-to shoes for relief when I’m dealing with a plantar fasciitis flare up.” — Senior Lifestyle and Beauty Commerce Editor Claire Sullivan

adidas’ Ultraboost 5X sneakers lend major wattage to your power walks. The popular running shoe got an update this fall to decrease the sneaker’s weight while upping the energy return, propelling you forward for a smooth, floaty stroll. Notably, these walking shoes for high arches feature adidas’ Torsion system for rock-solid stability, while a stretchy mesh upper prevents pressure on the top of the foot, which is common for those with high arches. This is an excellent option for those who like the feel of a cushioned running shoe — this new-and-improved iteration offers 9mm more foam in the midsole.

Editor testing and review notes: “Trusty heel-to-toe comfort truly sets adidas’ Ultraboost 5X sneakers apart from previous pairs. After a couple of steps in these sneakers, the emphasis on energy return was evident, and that’s all thanks to the airy and responsive Light BOOST midsole. I even wore the Ultraboost 5X sneakers to the gym in place of my typical adidas workout shoes, spending time on the stair climber and rowing machine, only to realize they’re just as equipped to take on all types of daily exercises — not just running.” — Footwear News contributor Yoni Yardeni

Editor testing and review notes: “As a longtime fashion editor, walking shoes might not seem like the most exciting sneaker category, but New Balance changed the game. The resurgence of textural Y2K-era running shoes as modern lifestyle sneakers deliver the support my arches need with a look that adds a sporty flair to workwear and compliments weekend outfits. Truthfully, most New Balance styles feel great for my arches, however, the 1906R’s superb stability with support from a great heel cup and ample midsole cushioning make daily moves feel comfortable without any end-of-day aches. The Gel-Nimbus 26 sneakers are wonderful for walking or running, and help to reduce supination as well. They come in a range of bright and neutral colors, and feature reflective details for increased nighttime visibility.

What testers say: “I love the way they hug my feet at just the right spots, and give that extra toe room on the top. Also, I’ve been having some ankle pain, even in my easy runs with my other pair of daily trainers, and these shoes got rid of the pain almost instantly. While they’re not as plush as other sneakers on our list, a deep heel cup and ample midfoot cushioning caters to high arches.

Editor testing and review notes: “These adidas sneakers are comfortable straight out of the box. The day I unboxed them, I wore them on a six mile walk in New York City and didn’t experience an ounce of rubbing or a single blister. I have very high arches that often cause many sneakers to apply pressure on the top of my feet that gets increasingly painful throughout the day — the Supernova Rise sneakers have a soft, stretchy upper that prevents this from happening. They’re low-profile enough for me to wear them to brunch with a pair of jeans when my plantar fasciitis is flaring up, which is a bonus, too.” — Sullivan

What to Look for in the Best Walking Shoes for High Arches

Having high arches can lead to a slew of uncomfortable or painful foot conditions, but fortunately, choosing the right footwear can alleviate pain from common problems and discomfort, as well as helping to prevent the development of new conditions. Here are some factors to keep in mind when shopping for walking shoes for high arches, according to podiatrists.

  • Arch support insoles: In order to feel comfortable while walking, you need a shoe that supports the shape of your foot. “ I always recommend shoes with arch support and cushion inside,” says Yau. “In addition to stabilizing and supporting the foot, the arch support also provides some comfort. As a result, pressure from the ground is distributed evenly throughout the foot, preventing pressure from being isolated. A foot arch support can ease foot pain as well as arch pain.”
  • Cushioned insoles: You should look for walking shoes that are fitted with cushioned insoles, or alternatively add your own supination insoles. “High-arched feet are best treated with supportive, softer and more flexible, lightweight types of soles to accommodate the high arch,” says Dr. Sutera. “Avoid rigid, stiff, and flat shoes. The purpose of insoles and orthotics for those with high-arched feet is to accommodate, absorb shock and cushion.”
  • Deep, wide toe box: Since those with high arches can often have hammertoes (toes that point upwards at the joint), they will benefit from walking shoes that can accommodate their toes. “My recommendation is to wear shoes with a deep, wide toe box,” says Yau. “The toe box is located at the front of the shoe, enclosing the toes. By doing so, the hammertoes can be accommodated and pain can be reduced.” The best shoes for wide feet help.
  • Heel-toe drop: A slight heel-toe drop (meaning the shoe’s sole is higher at the back than at the front) can also help support those with high arches to walk comfortably. “This means that the heel is thicker than the front of the shoe, unlike a platform or very flat shoe,” Dr. Sutera says. “These tend to be better for those who need more arch support.” But this doesn’t mean you should favor a high-heeled shoe by any means. “ When the heel height is extremely high, the foot can be tipped forward due to the awkward angle caused by high arches,” warns Yau. “A result of this will be pain and deformities in the toes that result from clawing and jamming.”

What Does It Mean to Have High Arches?

The foot arch we’re referring to here is the curve underneath your foot. “High arches are a higher arch than normal,” explains Yau. “On the bottom of the foot, the arch runs from the toes to the heel, and in high-arch foot types the mid part of the foot is raised. Pes cavus is another name for this condition. A high arch is the opposite of a flat foot.”

Having high arches can unfortunately lead to a range of issues. “A high-arched foot is one that is typically more rigid and with restricted mobility in the ankle and hips. This means that a high-arch foot may have a harder time absorbing impact forces and transferring force,” explains functional podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal.

Choosing the right footwear for high arches is crucial in preventing the development foot conditions. “If you have high arches, you should choose supportive shoes because wearing the wrong type of shoes can cause pain when walking or standing,” says Yau. “Having a high-arch foot can also lead to claw [toes] and hammertoes, as well as calluses on the toes and bottom of the foot, which can lead to ulcers. High arches can also change your foot’s shape, making finding shoes that fit difficult. Foot pain can be exacerbated by wearing shoes that don’t fit.”

Body of Work to Release Second Sneaker With San Antonio Shoemakers at Tokyo Pop-Up This Weekend https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/body-of-work-sas-jv-mesh-sneaker-tokyo-pop-up-1203691063/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 18:23:22 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203691063

Following the success of their first collaborative effort in November, emerging Canadian-made sportswear label Body of Work and Texas-based San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS) have come together once again for their second shoe.

For this new project, Body of Work updates SAS’ JV Mesh silhouette, a walking shoe featuring two velcro straps and a sleek profile inspired by cycling footwear and vintage sportswear design. Touched by approximately 80 artisans, the shoes feature accents of Italian nubuck, full grain leather, USA-made textiles and best-in-class technology providing comfort and support.

Inspired by retreats to the city park the Body of Work x SAS JV Mesh sneaker is handcrafted in the USA and comes men’s and women’s sizes and will be offered in two colorways drawing from the Canadian brand’s signature nature-derived palette – Ink Black/Black, a waxed nubuck leather and Cove Blue/Black, a dusty navy blue nubuck leather.

For Dwayne Vatcher, who cofounded Body of Work with Brittney MacKinnon in 2020, the new sneaker is a perfect complement to the brand’s existing apparel mix. “Our purpose, and what drives what we do, is bringing an aesthetic approach to active living,” Vatcher told FN in an interview. “This silhouette aligns well with what we do as it is both beautiful and functional, perfect for leisurely activity.”

And while the Body of Work team is excited about the launch, so too, is the SAS team. “As a brand that has proudly crafted footwear in the U.S. for nearly 50 years, we are thrilled to partner again with Body of Work for this exciting new release,” Nancy Richardson, chief executive officer of SAS, added. “This collaboration celebrates our shared values of meticulous artisanship and attention to detail, while also bringing fresh, modern design perspectives to our heritage of shoemaking.”

MacKinnon shares the same sentiment. “It has been a pleasure to work on a new silhouette with SAS following the welcome reception that our first project received,” MacKinnon said. “We are both makers dedicated to sourcing the finest materials and working with artisans who have honed their craft over generations.”

For the new silhouette’s launch, Vatcher and MacKinnon will be traveling to Japan for its official debut. The duo will be hosting a pop-up this weekend at the Float studio and art gallery in Tokyo. Located at 3-1-9 Meguro Honcho, Meguro-ku in the Japanese capital city, this marks Body of Work’s first Tokyo pop-up and will run Sept. 21 through Sept. 23. The shoe, which will retail for $255, will have a larger global release on Sept. 21, Vatcher confirmed.

Tokyo takes centerstage in the new shoe’s campaign as well. Shot by Ian Lanterman in Yoyogi Park and the surrounding neighborhoods in Tokyo, the setting serves as the perfect backdrop for the collaboration – highlighting the footwear and garments that balance beauty and ease of wear.

“Japan is a pretty important market for us,” MacKinnon told FN. “Ever since we started, the Japanese were the first to talk about Body of Work and we have a lot of direct customers who purchased from us there. Plus, Japan has very forward-thinking customers, and we wanted to bring this new shoe to them first. We look forward to connecting over this project with them in person.”

As much as we love our boots and sneakers, it’s easy to appreciate sandal weather and the cute summer sandals options that come with it. There’s nothing like shedding the socks, getting a fresh pedicure (or slathering on your best foot cream), and slipping into a pair of the most comfortable sandals for walking anywhere this summer.

The one wrench in this warm-weather fantasy is the foot pain that can accompany summer footwear. “A sandal is the least supportive shoe because there is little material to it,” says Dr. Glenn Davison, owner of Advanced Podiatry in New York City and New Jersey and a fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. “There is very little to no hold in a sandal, so if you’re moving at a quick pace or walking on an uneven surface, it’s easy to slide and pull a tendon or sprain an ankle.”

For these reasons, he explains, sandals can be particularly problematic for those seeking shoes for flat feet, shoes for plantar fasciitis, shoes for bunions, or walking shoes for high arches. Dr. Davison is a realist, however, and doesn’t expect his patients to skip sandals altogether in favor of the most comfortable women’s shoes like workout sneakers. “There’s nothing wrong with being style conscious; just give thought to how long you’re wearing certain sandals and how much you’re doing in them.”

The good news: Today’s footwear trends put comfort and support as top priorities. Podiatrist-approved Birkenstock sandals have been seen on the feet of celebs like Julianne Moore, Olivia Wilde, and Jessica Alba this spring alone. Meanwhile, trending silhouettes like fisherman sandals lock down the feet with ample strapping that’s often paired with a chunky, contoured sole.

Our editors have narrowed down the most comfortable walking sandals for women that promote the best foot health, according to Dr. Davison, firsthand editor testing, and glowing customer reviews to boot.

Editor’s Choice: Top 3 Best Sandals for Walking

You’ll need to consider a handful of factors when selecting the right walking sandals for you, including your foot type and any foot problems you deal with, your style aesthetic, and where you plan on wearing your comfortable walking sandals. You’ll also want to consider special features like responsive cushioning for long days on your feet or waterproof materials if you plan on wearing your walking sandals on a beach vacation. Because of the variation in the category, our editors are spotlighting the top three walking sandals we recommend for summer 2024 versus just one pair. Below, our picks.

  • Birkenstock Arizona Soft Slide Sandals: These trusty walking sandals come approved by podiatrists for their contoured footbed that molds to your feet over time. They’re our pick for the best walking sandals for travel, as you can wear them with a cute summer dress for a day out or team them with sweats when you’re headed to the airport.
  • Nike Calm Sandals: For those with problematic feet, Nike’s Calm Sandals are a top walking sandal for their plush straps that go easy on foot conditions like bunions, plus firm cushioning that supports your feet from the ground up. The adjustable straps ensure that narrow-to-wide foot types will feel comfortable in this pair of walking sandals.
  • Crocs Brooklyn Buckle Sandals: Our pick for the best waterproof walking sandals are these cute wedges from Crocs. They have a two-inch platform with a mild heel-to-toe drop that relieves foot tension for those with conditions like plantar fasciitis — expect a subtle height boost that won’t slow you down on your daily treks.

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Slide Sandals
Size range: 5 to 11.5
Materials: Leather upper and lining/synthetic sole with a cork footbed
Key features: Adjustable double straps and moldable footbed for maximum comfort that absorbs shock and mimics the shape of a healthy foot

The Birkenstock Arizona Soft slide sandals are a classic style complete with all the elements you’ll want to look for in good walking sandals for women: They have a contoured footbed that supports the arch, a grippy outsole, and soft leather straps that don’t rub. The brand counts celebs like Julianne Moore, Lily Collins, and Katie Holmes as fans, and podiatrists get behind these walking sandals, too. Dr. Davison lauds the brand as one of his favorites for its anatomical footbed.

What’s more, ordering Birkenstocks through a podiatrist or custom orthotics lab allows them to create the sandal with an orthotic just for you. If you’re not in need of custom insoles but you’re looking for comfort, test out regular Birkenstocks with their legendary footbed that hugs the foot’s contours and offers superior arch support.

What testers say: “I LOVE this shoe! I would highly recommend it. There was no need to break them in because they are already so durable. They go with all my casual wear. I am a 7.5, so I tried on an 8 in stores. The 8 was a tad too big, so I ordered the 7 shipped to my house and they fit like a dream! I plan on having these shoes for years to come!”

Ancient Greek Sandals Irida Sandals
Size range: 35 to 42 IT
Materials: Calf leather
Key features: Memory foam sole
Colors available: Natural, off-white, black
Farfetch Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.1/5 stars
If you suffer from any common foot problems — such as flat feet or plantar fasciitis — you understand the frustrations of being limited to certain comfortable sandals that often fall short in the style department. However, Ancient Greek Sandals, co-founded by Christina Martini (who studied footwear design and product development at Cordwainers College and later worked as a shoe designer for Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton) is determined to change the idea of what a comfortable sandal looks like with its “Comfort Soles” line.

The in-the-know brand is a fast favorite of the fashion set for fun sandals, and this pair is uncompromisingly comfortable thanks to the cushioned footbeds and memory foam insoles. Aside from that, they’re handmade in Greece by local skilled artisans using chemical-free leather. As far as aesthetics go, the sandals have a pared-down, expensive-looking design that consists of a buckle-fastening ankle strap, crossover strap detail, and a subtle flatform sole. These shoes are “quiet luxury” in every sense of the term — but without the price tag.

The Most Comfortable Types of Walking Sandals

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when shopping for walking shoes in the sandal department is opting for plain-old flip flops. According to Dr. Davison, flip flops or thong sandals, which have two straps that connect between the big toe and second toe, are the biggest offenders when it comes to problematic sandals. “With flip-flops, there is nothing in the back,” he explains. “You’re counting on your big toe to grip and hold your foot in place. It’s a shoe that commonly causes people to lose their footing. It’s the least supportive shoe.” For comfortable walking sandals, look to these styles instead:

  • Slides: Like a flip-flop, this style is good for wearing around the pool or short distances. But certain versions with arch support and anatomical foot contouring provide better stability for low-impact activities than their flimsy counterparts. These cute summer sandals are easy to slip on and wear out to lunch, wear as a pair of travel shoes, or sport when you’re running errands.
  • Athletic or sports sandals: Athletic sandals are some of the best sport sandals for walking, featuring several straps that grip the foot the way a sneaker does. Some even have closed toes and are ideal for hiking in warm weather because they offer support while keeping you cool. Hiking sandals and trail sandals are often waterproof, making them ideal for support and breathability when you’re headed to the beach or hitting a trail. These women’s walking sandals with arch support are great options for those seeking sandals for plantar fasciitis and walking shoes for high arches.
  • Slingbacks: Dr. Davison says a slingback, or the back strap in a sandal that helps keep feet in proper position with each step, is essential for a proper walking sandal. “The best sandal will hold the back of the foot like a regular shoe does. This holds the Achilles tendon in proper position and keeps the foot from sliding backwards.” These are some of the best walking sandals for travel, as they allow your feet to breathe while securing them in place.
  • Wedge sandal: Wedge sandals can be flip-flop style or slingback style, and either way, they’ll offer you some height. A comfortable wedge sandal features solid base promotes equal weight distribution, so you’re less likely to incur injury with wedges than you would with standard high heels.
  • Platform sandals: Similar to wedge sandals, these styles give you height with even weight distribution across your foot. If you’re looking for sandals for bunions that lend a little lift, these are ideal as they add an inch or two without putting pressure on the front of your foot.
  • Fisherman sandals: These fashionable comfortable sandals are a good choice for those who want to stay on trend without beating up your feet. The cute basket-weave upper is a style statement in and of itself, and you don’t have to worry about a pedicure, as they cover your toes. You can shop this style in a few different materials — leather is best as it’ll stretch and mold to your feet.
  • Recovery sandalsThese sandals are designed for post-workout relief. Like a cushioned running shoe, they feature a high stack that absorbs impact, offsetting pressure that would otherwise inflame your joints. While you can shop lots of men’s recovery sandals, women can shop options from leading brands like Oofos.

The Best Comfortable Walking Shoes for Different Foot Concerns

Sandal shopping, Dr. Davison says, shouldn’t be different than browsing for any other type of shoes, whether it’s the best walking shoes for women, slip-on sneakers, comfortable flats for women, or loafers for women. “It all comes down to being supported and preventing your arch from being strained, dropping and excessively pronating, which leads to pulling muscles and joints out of alignment,” he adds. If you’re dealing with existing foot concerns, keep these tips in mind.

  • Comfortable walking sandals for bunions: For those suffering from bunions, pick walking sandals with straps that don’t rub against the aggravated area. For this group of sandal lovers, an orthopedic shoe is worth a try for running errands, but look for a sportier sandal if you need shoes for standing all day or walking long distances.
  • Comfortable walking sandals for high arches: Completely flat surfaces are to be avoided, as they’re “exactly like walking barefoot,” Dr. Davison says. Seek out options that have features similar to the best stability running shoes to help prevent consistent overpronation. Brands like Birkenstock or Chaco have plenty of options with contoured, supportive foot beds that make great walking shoes for high arches.
  • Comfortable walking sandals for flat feet: The best shoes for flat feet have a little extra width to accommodate the entirety of your sole. Similar to walking shoes for high arches, those with flat feet should seek out shoes with a contoured footbed and visible arch support.
  • Comfortable walking sandals for plantar fasciitis: Recovery sandals are a nice everyday, around-the-house option for those seeking to manage existing plantar fasciitis pain. For longer walks, look for sandals that feature substantial arch support and cushioning.
  • Comfortable walking sandals for wide feet: The number one consideration for those shopping for shoes for wide feet is choosing a shoe that doesn’t pitch or rub against your foot throughout the day. Seek out options that have a wide toe box and flexible upper. Vagabond Shoemakers creates shoes in various styles that accommodate wide feet.
  • Comfortable walking sandals for heel spurs: A minor heel-to-toe drop is a key feature to look for when you’re shopping for shoes for heel spurs. This offsets the pressure from the back of your foot, freeing up your heel without rubbing against it. Wedge sandals are a great choice.

What to Consider When Shopping for Comfortable Walking Sandals

Despite the wide range of different foot types and footwear requirements, some generic design principles constitute a comfortable sandal. So, follow these guidelines from a 2021 review published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research to ensure you find the most comfortable walking sandals for you:

  • Fit of the sandal: An essential factor to consider when selecting the most comfortable walking sandals is ensuring that your foot is supported equally across its entirety with accommodative support. If the sandal fits too loose, you can stand the chance of slipping out of your sandal and twisting your ankle, but if it’s too tight, it restricts your foot, causing it not to be able to move naturally and even long-term conditions like plantar fasciitis.
  • Shoe inserts or insoles: Many people find that sandals do not have enough support and cushioning in the soles to provide a stable and comfortable surface for the feet. Luckily, insoles are an option to avoid discomfort and pain when wearing sandals, and “the evidence suggests that the addition of insoles improves footwear comfort in casual footwear,” according to the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research’s review. For those who want to add insoles to sandals, look for sandals with deeper removable footbeds so that the insoles fit properly into the footbeds without causing pressure on the top of the feet.
  • Sole flexibility: Sandals with “curved rocker-soles appear to be beneficial for comfort compared to flat soles,” according to the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research’s review. This is because rocker-sole shoes have thick soles that are curved up at the front and sometimes back of the shoe, and they enable the foot to move through a normal walking motion with less pressure on the joints and the bottom of the foot. The good news? Many sandals come with rocker soles built-in. In fact, it has become a bit of a fad that brands like Dansko, FitFlop, Skechers, Teva, and even Givenchy have leaned into the silhouette.
  • Heel elevation: Heel elevation greatly affects whether a shoe is perceived as comfortable or not. So, if you’re not someone who has become accustomed to wearing high heels over long periods of use, find a comfortable walking sandal with a low heel. This doesn’t mean the sandal has to be completely flat to be comfortable — it just has to have an appropriate wedge angle for its corresponding heel height. In short, don’t reach for a sandal that puts your foot in a vertical position.
  • The upper material of the sandal: Wherever you’re heading, your sandal must be breathable, durable, and flexible to accommodate swelling. Lightweight, stretchy materials that increase airflow to your feet, such as mesh and suede, are ideal options for sandals because they’re soft and generate lower pressures on the dorsum of the foot, which Journal of Foot and Ankle Research found to be the most comfortable for wearers.
  • Wear time: When shopping for comfortable walking sandals, consider where you’ll wear them and how long you will be in them. For example, if you have mid to high arches and have your eyes on a sandal with a flat sole, this option won’t be best if you plan on wearing them all day and night. However, if you’re wearing them out for a couple of hours and intend to hop in and out of Ubers, it shouldn’t be as problematic for your feet.

When to Replace Your Comfortable Walking Sandals

Similar to comfortable sneakers for women, walking sandals need replacing on a regular basis to ensure your feet get the support they need. Even the best sandals for walking long distances are prone to wear and tear over time. Brands like Chaco create shoes with ultra-durable materials — these can last you up to five years. Sandals made of rubber or polyurethane may begin to lose their integrity after two seasons. If you’re wondering if it’s time to replace your walking sandals, inspect the insole and the outsole — if they’re compressed or have lost their traction, it’s time for a new pair.

Florals for spring? Yes, please! The buzziest new sneaker drop from Hoka features flowery sneakers that are almost convincing enough to fool a bumble bee. The Vibrant Bloom footwear collection offers five whimsical footwear styles adorned in happy florals, including fan-favorite recovery slides and adorable new walking shoes for women and men in Hoka’s cult-favorite sneaker models.

You may already have go-to white sneakers on standby for spring, but you definitely don’t have any that are quite as adorable and supportive these. The Vibrant Bloom sneaker collection includes three especially stylish iterations of the best Hoka sneakers, including makeovers to the One One Bondi L, Clifton L, and Clifton LS shoes, that are comfortable and versatile for long days on your feet — be it a day at the office or a picnic in the park.

The Bondi L, a plush, cushioned running shoe with durable off-white nubuck leather uppers, now comes framed in an embroidered floral crown with a unique purple marbled outsole. The supportive sneaker model features MetaRocker outsoles that aid in arch support and super smooth strides, along with a full-length EVA midsole for buoyant step-offs. Hoka’s One One Bondi franchise has been sported by countless off-duty celebrities from the gym to the airport, including Olivia Wilde, Sofia Vergara, Kris Jenner, and Gisele Bundchen.

The Vibrant Bloom Clifton L shoe features familiar flowery embroidery seen on the Bondi L, but this time blooming along the back of the leather uppers, as if an overgrown garden was vining around your heel. From the front, they look like typical white sneakers, while the playful pops of color will catch the eye of whoever’s trailing behind you. Clifton L’s stacked CMEVA midsole, airy perforated panelling, and soft EVA footbed make it an ideal walking shoe that can carry you through the day and into a post-work gym session or a sunset hike. The Clifton LS, the third offering in Hoka’s spring sneaker drop, comes with similar support as the Clifton L but with more luxe, lifestyle touches, like remixed pebbled leather uppers, luxe suede detailing, and low-profile laces. Instead of flowers, the shoe fronts cool orange waves on either side, plus royal purple pops along its high-traction, Durabrasion Rubber outsoles.

These fresh-picked, flower power steppers will bring an instant mood boost to your spring shoe rotation, whether you’re looking for a reliable running shoe with more fashion appeal or a daily sneaker that doesn’t feel so drab. As modeled in Hoka’s campaign imagery, they’re the ideal white sneakers to wear with dresses — especially with a pair of frilly socks for a double-dose of feminine flair. They’re also effortlessly easy to pair with daily denim and khakis, or to coordinate clothing pieces with the many colors that practically jump off the leather uppers.

Shop the brand new Hoka Vibrant Bloom collection below. But make sure to snag your size fast, because these are bound to sell out by the end of the week.

If you’re part of the flat feet club — whether due to injury or plain-old genetics — understanding the features that go into the best walking shoes for flat feet is essential for preventing pain and avoiding foot problems down the line.

“Fallen arches, another name for flat feet, is a common disorder in which the foot arch hits the ground when standing, either fully or partially,” says Dr. Miguel Cunha, DPM, a podiatric surgery specialist and founder of Gotham Footcare in Manhattan. “This disorder may develop over time due to weak arches, injury, or health issues such as diabetes, obesity, or arthritis; or it may be congenital, meaning it exists from birth.”

Anatomically speaking, the structure of the foot is the primary distinction between a person with flat feet and someone with a conventional arch. “When standing, a typical arch — the inner portion of the foot — is slightly elevated, which aids in equally transferring body weight throughout the foot. Ligaments and tendons support this arch, preserving its structural integrity,” Dr. Cunha says. “On the other hand, in people with flat feet, the arch collapses and the entire foot comes into contact with the ground.”

Fallen arches often cause overpronation, or when the foot excessively rolls inward during walking or running, which contributes to more strain and pain in the legs, ankles, and feet. That’s just one reason why it’s important for people with flat feet to prioritize quality footwear. “By definition, those with flat feet need increased arch support,” says Dr. Tim Oldani, DPM, FACFAS. That means striking a balance between a shoe with enough support to avoid overpronation and foot pain, according to Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry, DPM.

Here, our podiatrists explain exactly what to look for in walking shoes for flat feet, and the best picks to buy whether you’re looking for something that’ll propel you through daily power walks, a sneaker comfortable enough to wear to work every day, or a travel shoe you can stash in your luggage to explore a new city on foot. Many of these options aren’t only podiatrist-approved, but are also personally tested by our writer, who has congenital flat feet. Keep scrolling for the 11 best walking shoes for flat feet.

Best men’s walking shoe for flat feet

If you’re looking for a lightweight and comfortable shoe that’s supportive without being clunky, Dr. Daughtry recommends the Asics GT 1000. “The sock liner gently hugs the foot while the midsole is reinforced with flexible, stabilizing layers to avoid excessive pronation,” she says. These Asics sneakers do just that, thanks to the brand’s Litetruss inner midsole technology. They also have lightweight cushioning and an eight millimeter heel-to-toe drop, which is on the higher end, to help reduce pressure on the calves and Achilles tendons.

What testers say: “This shoe delivers great support, light and comfortable. For someone who has back issues, I never notice them when wearing these shoes. I use them while coaching on the football field, running up and down the field. I also overpronate, and these give me stability and extra cushioning while walking, running, or doing physical activities. I would recommend purchasing these shoes to anyone.”

Best tennis shoes for walking with flat feet
Naot Women’s Apollo Buzz Sneakers
Size range: 4 to 12 women’s
Materials: Suede and leather
Special features: Removable footbed with arch support, orthotic-friendly, APMA-accepted
Amazon Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.5/5 stars
This low-profile women’s tennis shoe from Naot is sleek and supportive enough to wear all day into the night. “This shoe comes with a cork and latex footbed that provides firmer support through the arch and helps absorb shock under the ball of the foot, which can be a problem for those who pronate when walking,” Dr. Oldani says. The footbed is removable, so you can easily pop in your own custom supination insoles — either way, if you’re between sizes, you’ll want to size up to the nearest whole number. If that doesn’t convince you that these are some of the best walking shoes for women with flat feet, the Buzz also has a slip-resistant sole and APMA accepted, which means podiatrists recommend it for promoting good foot health.

What testers say: “These fit well and are attractive in the mottled gray finish with bronzy/coppery band across the foot. I love tie sneakers since my feet are different sizes and I can adjust the fit. The arch support in these feels moderate rather than excellent but sufficient for me, and I require good arch support. The abundant interior padding at the tongue, heel, and top edge is great. The bouncy soles help a lot with overall foot support, for walking or wearing all day long.”

Special features: Maximum cushioning, maximum stability to prevent overpronation, available in wide width, APMA-approved
Zappos Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.8/5 stars
Dr. Daughtry recommends these plushy Hoka’s for their supportive cushioning, arch support, and wide sizing options. “This particular sneaker has strategically placed rubber around the exterior in the area that experiences the most wear and tear for added durability while offering plush padding internally to cushion the foot,” she says. This APMA-approved Hoka sneaker has maximum shock absorption from EVA foam, even during speedy brisk walks. You’ll also get maximum stability from these cushioned running shoes, as they have a frame that prevents overpronation without overcorrecting your gait.

What testers say: “If you spend eight to 12 hours a day on your feet then you need these. I also have bunions and flat feet and these relieve pain tremendously. I work at a high-volume hospital and I can get through my work day comfortably. I’ve also noticed a little lower back pain relief as well. I was worried about spending so much money and not getting results, but you get what you pay for. These are worth the investment.”

Special features: Arch support, midsole and heel cushioning

If you’re looking for some good walking shoes for flat feet that are as comfortable as they are stylish, you can’t go wrong with this New Balance walking shoe. The layered suede and leather upper makes for an eye-catching texture that levels up any outfit, but it’s the sneakers’ smart tech that impressed us most when we tested these. These New Balance shoes boast a Stability Web outsole that provides arch support and helps absorb shock with each step. This sneaker also has a solid amount of heel cushioning that makes a difference for those, like nurses, who need shoes for standing all day.

What testers say: “One of the most comfortable sneakers I’ve ever worn. I had this model 1906R on all day and night straight from a festival all the way through a night show and my feet did not hurt and I have flat feet. Easily one of my top favorite shoe purchases.”

Plantar fasciitis causes inflammation in the tissues that connect the heel to the toes — and a supportive, cushioned shoe like this OrthoFeet knit sneaker can help alleviate and prevent some of that pain. “This shoe offers a mild rocker within the outer sole to help support the arch with each step. And the design of the shoe also provides some motion control, limiting pronation when walking,” Dr. Oldani says. In addition to the mild rocker and motion control design, these APMA-approved women’s walking shoes for flat feet come with removable orthotic insoles with anatomical arch support as well as an Arch Booster piece that you can pop in the shoe for added arch support. The stretchy knit upper and wide toe box ensure your feet have plenty of room, even when they’re slightly swollen from strolling all day.

What testers say: “I experienced immediate relief of my plantar fasciitis when wearing the Coral Stretch Knit shoes and had more energy throughout the day. Best purchase I’ve made!”

Hoka Arahi 6 Sneakers
Size range: 7 to 15 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Materials: Breathable mesh upper
Special features: Extra stability to prevent overpronation, anatomical arch support, good cushioning
Zappos Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.8/5 stars
Hoka quickly became the unofficial #hotgirlwalk shoe for its ample cushioning that cradles your feet. The Arahis come recommended by Dr. Cunha and Dr. Daughtry because they offer the stability that people with flat feet need. “This is a perfect option for flat feet because it is designed to prevent overpronation or the inward turning of the heel, which can lead to the development of plantar fasciitis or other foot ailments,” says Dr. Daughtry. Specifically, this sneaker boasts a J-frame that runs along the inner side of the shoe and wraps around it to “maintain proper sagittal motion and minimize frontal plane motion,” Dr. Cunha adds.

When testing these plantar fasciitis-friendly walking shoes, we especially appreciated the spacious toe box that allows your toes to move freely, plus the deep heel cup and extra cushioning for an excellent ride and control for flat feet. Hoka’s signature EVA foam-cushioned footbed and anatomical arch support hold the plantar fascia and prevent it from collapsing to minimize fatigue and pain, says Dr. Cunha.

What testers say: “I have flat feet and overpronate. These shoes are perfect for my feet. They fit my feet just right and have just the right amount of cushion as well (not too much and not too little) and it doesn’t weigh that much for a stability shoe. My shoe size is normally an 11.5 D (each one of my feet is 10.7 inches long), however, with these I find the 11 to be just the right size for me.”

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 Sneakers
Size range: 7 to 15 men’s; 5 to 13 women’s
Materials: Recycled materials
Special features: Extra cushioning, arch support, available in four different widths, APMA-accepted
These Brooks sneakers offer structure, arch support, and stability in a lightweight package with enough cushioning for all-day wear. “The responsiveness of these shoes helps propel flat feet forward when walking,” Dr. Cunha says. That’s thanks to generous cushioning that adds pep to your step and relieves pressure off your legs and feet. “Brooks’ proprietary Guiderails technology helps align your feet when your ankles flex inward to minimize excess movement, which provides support for flat feet, knees, and hips,” Dr. Cunha says. And if you need shoes for bunions or simply prefer extra room in the toe box, these sneakers come in four widths including wide and extra-wide. It’s no wonder why Brooks sneakers have been granted the APMA Seal of Approval for promoting good foot health.

What testers say: “Super happy with my Adrenaline GTS 23’s! They were comfortable right from the start. I wear them for outdoor power walking and at-home strength training videos. I struggle with plantar fasciitis, overpronation, and weak ankles. They are very supportive sneakers, with a nice amount of cushion.”

Best walking shoes for flat feet and overpronation
Saucony Guide 16 Sneakers
Size range: 7 to 16 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Materials: Recycled materials
Special features: Extra stability and cushioning, available in two widths, high heel-to-toe drop
Saucony Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.6/5 stars
The Saucony Guide features a thick foam midsole that makes walking miles effortless. Plus, you’ll get great pronation control with this stability running shoe. “These shoes are ideal for people with flat feet who overpronate, as they are designed with structural posting underneath the arch and a Hollow-Tech ribboned piece that wraps underneath the foot to prevent overpronation and maintain arch stability in people with flat feet,” Dr. Cunha says. This Saucony sneaker helps relieve pressure off the calves and Achilles tendon from it’s substantial eight millimeter heel-to-toe drop. It also comes in a wide width variety, which will give you extra space in the toe box for those who need shoes for wide feet.

What testers say: “I’m a pronator and flat footer and these shoes are something special. Great stability as other brands but its light weight makes the difference vs. other shoes.”

Price upon publish date of this article: $140

Asics Gel Kayano 30 Sneakers
Size range: 6 to 16 men’s; 5 to 13 women’s
Materials: Stretch knit upper
Special features: Extra stability to prevent overpronation, maximum gel cushioning
Asics Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.4/5 stars
These sneakers have a new 4D Guidance System that helps prevent overpronation with every step and adapts to your walking patterns over time, Dr. Cunha explains. “They have an increased heel bevel for controlled impact and smoother transitions, a sculpted midsole for more lateral compression, and an energetic medial foam to guide your foot to support your arch from collapsing.”

The Asics Gel Kayano, as its name implies, boasts gel cushioning that softens the blow of every step during long walks, leisurely jogs, or long-distance runs. “Cushioning is a key factor for people with flat feet because the majority of the bottom of the foot is intact with the ground,”  says Dr. Daughtry. “Heel strike, midstance, and propulsion can create stress throughout the entire foot, especially when walking or running as the repetitive ‘pounding’ of the foot on the ground reinforces significant stress on the joints, tendons and ligaments.”

What testers say: “I bought these as I am in a marathon build and wanted some extra cushion. Additionally, I am an over-pronator and wanted some support. These shoes are wonderfully cushioned and supportive and make doing long runs much more comfortable. I used to wear a different brand of shoe for long runs and the bottoms of my feet would hurt by the ends of the runs. This hasn’t happened at all since switching to these.”

New Balance Fuelcell Walker Elite Sneakers
Size range: 7 to 16 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Materials: Synthetic, engineered mesh and textile upper
Special features: Extra cushioning, gait stabilization, available in three different widths
New Balance Top-Quality Store Badge on Google: 4.5/5 stars
Not many brands can compete with New Balance when it comes to comfortable shoes for men and women, and the Fuelcell Walker Elite is podiatrist-approved for its superior support and cushioning. “This shoe includes an outer sole that controls the pronation of the heel with each heel strike,” says Dr. Oldani. The Walking Strike Path outsole technology is a special outsole feature that helps stabilize your foot as you walk to help prevent your arches from rolling inwards. What’s more, this sneaker has maximum cushioning from New Balance’s FuelCell foam that propels you forward and absorbs shock with each step. We love that this sneaker comes in three different widths, as many people with flat feet will want to consider trying the wide or extra wide varieties for extra room in the toe box.

What testers say: “I ordered these in the extra wide version and they fit perfectly even though my feet are not very wide. Very breathable upper and quite light too. The Fuelcell midsole in the Walker Elite is not as soft as the one in SC Trainer v2 or something like Invincible 3 but is perfectly supportive and responsive for daily walks. The tongue is semi-gusseted, and it’s attached to a layer of mesh from the two sides. There is enough cushioning for your heel but no pinching.”

Best shoes for flat feet and standing all day
Brooks Addiction Walker 2 Sneakers
Size range: 7 to 15 men’s; 5 to 12 women’s
Materials: Leather
Special features: Maximum support, available in four different widths, slip-resistant sole
Healthcare workers (and anyone after work shoes for men or women) turn to this Brooks walking shoe to keep their feet pain-free after long days standing or walking. “This shoe offers maximum support and increased shock absorption compared to some running shoes, making it a good choice for those with flat feet,” Dr. Oldani says. The Brooks Addiction Walker is also certified slip-resistant, making them ideal for walking through different terrains, whether that’s a shiny hospital floor or a rain-soaked sidewalk. They offer extra soft cushioning as well as maximum support with the addition of a Progressive Diagonal Rollbar, which is a post in the shoe’s arch that helps you walk more easily and stay in your stride. These come in wide and extra wide versions, so you can choose a wider shoe to accommodate a natural toe splay.

What testers say: “I really like these shoes. The comfort is definitely there after being on my feet for 12 hours. Easy to clean as well. It’s a 10/10 for me. I would recommend these for healthcare workers and students in clinical. I would recommend you size up at least half a size.”

What to Look for in the Best Walking Shoes for Flat Feet

To guarantee the best possible comfort, support, and stability in the best walking shoes for flat feet, look for the following components:

  • Arch support: Good arch support is essential because it helps reduce pain by providing your collapsed arches with the necessary reinforcement. “Shoes with integrated arch support can lessen the pressure on the ligaments and tendons in the foot and help with the equal distribution of weight,” Dr. Cunha says. Good arch support can be found in two forms: Either within the actual insole of the shoe, providing maximum contact through the arch, or within the outer sole of the shoe, with a heavier, sturdier outsole that limits your foot from flattening when walking, Dr. Oldani explains.
  • Motion control: People with flat feet can benefit from motion control features because they help stabilize the foot and prevent overpronation, which can cause pain and even injury, Dr. Cunha says. “To encourage correct alignment and stop the foot from rolling inward too much, look for shoes with supportive elements like strong heel counters and reinforced midsoles.”
  • Wide shoes: A wide-fitting shoe or a wide-width shoe will have the same length as a regular-sized shoe but with a wider toe box and forefoot. Due to the lack of medial arch, most people with flat feet tend to have a wider foot structure, Dr. Daughtry says. Plus, people with flat feet need more space in their shoes’ toe box and midfoot area to allow for the natural splaying of the foot. Choosing shoes with a wider fit will give your toes enough room to spread out, which can help prevent pain, blisters, and common foot problems such as bunions, hammer toes, neuromas, and ingrown toenails. In fact, “most of the problems with our feet — particularly for women and runners — stem because our shoes don’t have a wide enough forefoot,” Dr. Cunha says. To determine whether the forefront is wide enough, Dr. Cunha shares a foolproof trick: “Trace your foot onto a piece of paper at the end of the day when your feet are most swollen; then, place the shoe over the tracing of the foot. If the tracing of the foot is wider than the periphery of the shoe, your shoes are too narrow.”
  • Cushioning: Ample cushioning adds comfort and helps reduce fatigue when you’re on your feet for hours. “Cushioning is necessary to reduce impact and make walking comfortable, particularly for people with flat feet who might put more strain on their feet while walking,” Dr. Cunha says. “To lessen the impact on the feet and lower limbs, look for shoes with enough cushioning in the heel and midsole sections.”
  • Heel-to-toe drop: Heel-to-toe drop refers to the difference between the height of the shoe’s heel and the area under the ball of the foot. A low heel-to-toe drop is under seven millimeters, while a high drop is generally over seven millimeters, Dr. Oldani says. Both Dr. Oldani and Dr. Cunha recommend a higher heel-to-toe drop for those with flat feet, as it will ease pressure on the calf muscles and Achilles tendon.
  • Rigid shank and heel counter: If you can bend your sneaker in half, that’s a tell-tale sign you should look into buying new shoes. The shank, which is a piece in the midsole of the shoe, provides support and stability when you walk. “The shank is the actual structure of the shoe and should be rigid to hold up and support the arch,” Dr. Cunha says. In addition to a stiffer shoe, you’ll also want to look for a rigid heel counter — that means you shouldn’t be able to compress the heel of the shoe. “There should be a good bit of padding called an ankle collar, which is intended to cushion the ankle and the Achilles tendon, and support the heel.”

New Shoe Brand Klaw Debuts With Podiatrist-Approved Walking Sneakers https://footwearnews.com/shoes/sneaker-news/klaw-sneakers-launch-release-info-1203509127/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 14:17:51 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203509127 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Klaw has officially entered the shoe market with its debut style — a comfort-focused walking sneaker.

The brand-new shoe brand’s first-ever sneaker, the $148 Klaw 528, is now live online. Inspired by a need for a walking shoe that’s both comfortable and stylish, Klaw has released the style with podiatrist Dr. Nelya Lobkova. Lobkova worked with the brand, per a statement, to create its sports treatment-based insole and midsole — particularly emphasizing arch support, heel comfort and shock absorption.

The new pair features a round-toed silhouette with paneled waterproof leather uppers, creating a minimalist approach to the popular chunky walking sneaker. The lace-up set is also available in monochrome hues of white, black, gray and tonal yellow, providing a subtle range of tones that can smoothly pair with a range of ensembles.

The aforementioned lightweight midsoles form the shoe’s base, complete with a forefoot rocker, wide toe box and deep heel cups for added stability throughout the day. Exaggerated, molded rubber outsoles finish the pair with a retro flair, while remaining traction-focused and practical for easygoing activities — including, as the brand lists on its site, walking, everyday wear and light workouts.

Aside from its nostalgic design and technological advancements, Klaw’s debut sneaker is also sustainable. The brand has taken the initiative to recycle all of its customer returns, when they occur, through a union with nonprofit Soles4Souls — which distributes used footwear and clothing to those in need worldwide.

You can currently find Klaw’s Klaw 528 sneakers live on its website, which the brand has also promoted through Instagram.

The Best Machine-Washable Shoes for Every Occasion https://footwearnews.com/shop/shoes-guide/best-machine-washable-shoes-1203484786/ Fri, 07 Jul 2023 20:37:25 +0000 https://footwearnews.com/?p=1203484786 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Footwear News may receive an affiliate commission.

Nothing says summer more than spending time outside, taking walks on the shore, hanging at the park, or hiking with your dog. But the great outdoors can come with a side of dirt. So, it’s smart to consider the best machine-washable shoes when you’re shopping for that perfect pair of warm-weather kicks — especially if you have a love affair with white sneakers for women or men.

In recent years, brands like Rothy’s, Allbirds, Cariuma, and others have increased machine-washable offerings. And the style of shoes available comes in a wide range. Sneakers aren’t the only shoes that can be thrown into the wash for a refresh: You can find flats, comfortable dress shoes, supportive shoes for standing all day, slip-on sneakers for running errands, and more.

Podiatrist Dr. Alissa Kuizinas believes it’s smart to buy machine-washable shoes for a number of reasons. “Buying machine-washable shoes is great because it is easy to keep them clean and free from bacteria and fungus,” Dr. Kuizinas explains. “Just be careful to wash them in cold water and do not use a dryer, otherwise they can shrink.”

It’s important to keep in mind that even though shoes might be washable, you should still replace them on a regular basis. “Worn-down soles force you to hit the ground at an angle that’s abnormal, which affects your skeleton,” explains podiatrist Dr. Jacqueline Sutera. “This can cause injury or pain.”

Dr. Sutera said the best way to tell if your shoes are worn down is to place them on a flat surface (like a table) and view the shoes at eye-level. If the heels and soles are not even, then it’s time to replace your pair. The bottoms of shoes also often show visible damage. There are ways to extend the life of your shoes, though. Cariuma, a brand that creates sustainable, machine-washable shoes, advises taking preventative measures like adding an anti-slip sole to prevent wear and using a shoehorn to put your shoes on.

It’s smart to incorporate different kinds of shoes, too — and it can’t hurt for maintenance reasons to purchase washable shoes for different purposes. “Having a shoe wardrobe is important,” Sutera said. “You need a pair of slippers, a boot, a few sneakers, a loafer – essentially a range of shoes you can wear depending on the day and activity, and also throughout the day if you need to. Our bodies love moderation and variety, so you should not wear the same shoes all day every day.”

Ahead, the best machine-washable shoes to shop right now, and tips on how to clean white sneakers and more.

What to Look for In the Best Washable Shoes

When you’re searching for the best machine-washable shoes, there are a few key factors to look out for including material and purpose.

  • Materials: “Most often mesh, nylon, or canvas shoes are machine washable,” says Dr. Kuizinas. “Many materials like leather or suede cannot be machine washed.” The added benefit of these washable materials is that they’re ideal for summertime wear, as they tend to be more breathable.
  • Weight: “I would look for shoes that are relatively flexible and can bend easily, are lightweight, and are made of materials that are lightweight and amenable to washing,” Dr. Kuizinas explains. “Heavier, stiffer shoes will be less likely to tolerate the washing machine as well.”
  • Cost: As for cost, Dr. Kuizinas said the price point on washable shoes can vary. “Any price point can be appropriate for machine-washable shoes, but generally the range from $30-150 makes sense.”

Waking up with plantar fasciitis pain is no walk in the park. But the best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis make things far more manageable — and may even help you recover from the frustrating injury.

Plantar fasciitis is caused by irritation of the ligament that runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. And if you’re one of the 2 million people who undergo plantar fasciitis treatment for this common foot injury every year, you may already know that although those first few steps of the day are painful, walking actually helps ease the pain from plantar fasciitis with each additional step.

But the shoes you wear matter. The best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis are supportive, comfortable, and cushioned. And no matter what caused your acute or nagging plantar fasciitis — standing for long periods, running, and even your foot shape can play a role — ensuring you stay mobile and not barefoot is crucial to your recovery, says Hilary Brenner, DPM, a New York-based podiatrist and foot surgeon. You want to protect the soles of your feet from the hard surfaces around your house and outside to allow the plantar fascia ligament to heal, she says.

To help speed up your recovery, we did the research and tapped Brenner and other foot health pros to share a comprehensive list of the best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis. These sneakers and slip ons will help you heal so you can get back to doing what you love sooner. Note: If you still love a certain pair of sneakers that didn’t make the list for the best walking shoes, you can try insoles for plantar fasciitis — our foot pros recommend those from Superfeet, Cadence, Currex, or Birkenstock. Just swap the insole in your current pair for one with more arch support and stability — two key features to look for in plantar fasciitis footwear — to feel the difference.

Ahead, the top walking shoes for plantar fasciitis, backed by podiatrists.

Best Overall Walking Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis
Hoka Bondi 8 Shoes
Size range: Women’s 5 to 12; men’s 7 to 16
Weight: 8.9 oz (women’s); 10.8 oz. (men’s)
Special features: Made for everyday walking and easy runs; “plush” level of cushion to relieve pressure on fascia
Pros: High amount of cushion
Cons: Lower heel-to-toe drop of 4 mm
Retailer availability:  hoka.com, rei.com, dickssportinggoods.com, nordstrom.com
If you’re looking for a purchase backed by science, the HOKA Bondi is it. A January 2022 study published in Clinical Research on Foot and Ankle found that a maximalist, high-cushion shoe – specifically, participants wore the Hoka Bondi 6 — is best at reducing plantar fasciitis pain, compared to a standard athletic sneaker. The latest cushioned running shoe available is the Hoka 8, which still has the same great features as earlier versions, including soft, lightweight foam used on the in and outsole of these sneakers to ensure you feel like you’re walking on air with every stride. Hoka calls their Bondi 8 the “ultra-cushioned game-changer,” so get ready to find pain relief.

Best Women’s Walking Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis
Tory Burch Good Luck Shoes
Size range: 4 to 13
Special features: Good arch support, wide toe box, thick heel, semi-stiff sole
Pros: Stylish option that can be dressed up or down
Cons: Only available in women’s sizing
Retailer availability: toryburch.com, nordstrom.com, amazon.com, zappos.com, bloomingdales.com
“The Tory Burch Good Luck Trainer passes my four-test rule,” says Brenner. It has a thick arch for support, a wide-chunky heel to stabilize the foot and offer shock absorption, a semi-stiff sole, and a wide toe box, she says. You can find these walking shoes for plantar fasciitis across multiple retailers online, and while there are currently four colorways available on the designer’s site, Zappos, for example, currently has as many as 11 different color options.

Best Walking Shoes for High Arches and Plantar Fasciitis
Oofos Ooahh Sport Flex Shoes
Size range: Women’s 6 to 21; men’s 4 to 19
Special features: Adjustable strap for customized comfort and fit
Pros: Absorbs impact, good arch support
Cons: Lower heel-to-toe drop
Retailer availability: oofos.com, rei.com
Slip-on sandals are convenient for so many reasons — slide them on to walk the dog, run errands, or when you’re heading to the pool. But so many of these easy-on, easy-off footwear options provide little to no support — a big problem for those with plantar fasciitis. Oofos recovery footwear solves that problem thanks to its trademarked Oofoam technology that “absorbs 37 percent more impact than traditional footwear foam materials to reduce the stress on your feet and joints,” according to the company’s website. Paul Langer, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist with Twin Cities Orthopedics, loves these sandals for plantar fasciitis pain thanks to the increased arches support, which helps reduce the pressure put on the ligaments in the foot and ultimately speed up healing. They’re great shoes for standing all day.

Best Walking Shoes for Foot Pain
Asics Gel-Nimbus 25 Shoes
Size range: Women’s 5 to 13; men’s 6 to 16
Weight: 9.2 oz. (women’s); 10.5 oz. (men’s)

Pros: 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, designed for neutral or underpronation
Cons: Neutral, moderate support
Retailer availability: asics.com, nordstrom.com, footlocker.com, zappos.com
As the latest version in the Asics Gel-Nimbus family, this walking shoe’s “midsole is packed with the most cushioning that the series has offered to date,” according to the brand’s website. The heel-to-toe drop is 8mm, which falls nicely in the recommended range for those with plantar fasciitis, per Brenner.

Best Walking Shoes for Overpronation and Plantar Fasciitis
New Balance 1540v3 Shoes
Size range: Women’s 5 to 13; men’s 7 to 16
Weight: 11.2 oz. (women’s); 14.9 oz. (men’s)

Pros: Stabilizing design, prevent overpronation, available in many widths
Cons: Not available in many colors
Retailer availability: newbalance.com, amazon.com, zappos.com
The New Balance 1540v3 sneakers offer an encap midsole with a softer, supportive middle surrounded by a firmer rim, which means it’s able to combine cushion and support with stability. The rollbar technology helps to prevent overpronation. All of this is beneficial for someone suffering from plantar fasciitis. Brenner likes these walking shoes because they offer motion control to keep the foot in a neutral position and avoid compensation in your gait, which could put extra strain on the plantar fasciitis, she explains.

Special features: Forefoot rocker, max cushion
Pros: Altra’s trademark FootShape, 33 mm midsole
Cons: Chunkier look, designed for running
Retailer availability: altrarunning.com, rei.com, amazon.com
Forefoot rockers have a stiffer outsole and a larger toe spring which has been shown to reduce pain of plantar fasciitis, says Dr. Langer. The Altra Via Olympus is one of the shoes he most often recommended to his patients who are looking for a forefoot rocker option. While Altra is known for its low-profile sneakers and natural-shaped toe box, the Via Olympus is an ultra-high cushion option that will keep your pain in your heels at bay while also allowing you to stay mobile and comfortable while healing from plantar fasciitis.

“Hoka makes very very cushioned shoes, and this is often good for starting to walk with a painful foot,” says Meredith Warner, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and inventor of The Healing Sole. She specifically recommends the Hoka Clifton 9 for walking with plantar fasciitis. This model is also helpful for anyone dealing with or looking to prevent shin splints, or injury to the muscle and bone tissue near the shins, as this latest iteration of the Clifton collection has an even cushier heel with 3 mm more stack height from earlier generations.

Best Men’s Walking Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis
Adidas Gazelle Sneakers

Special features: Sturdy, firm sole, heel stability
Pros: Stylish for everyday wear, stuff insole
Cons: Lacking on arch support

While the Adidas Gazelle line of shoes is available in unisex, men’s, a women’s platform, and even youth models, the original collection is a great choice for an everyday men’s walking shoe for those suffering from nagging plantar fasciitis pain. The Gazelle “is a good zero-drop minimalist option that will allow more contact with the entire foot and therefore limit pressure just on the heel,” which can be a particular area of pain for plantar fasciitis, says Dr. Warner.

What to Look for In the Best Walking Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

While choosing the right shoe for you will be individual to your feet and your needs, these universal elements are important to look for in the best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis.

  • Thick arch: Walking shoes designed for high arches, which have a high level of midsole arch support, will help reduce the strain on your plantar fascia ligament by providing shock absorption, says Brenner. “Arch support is more important than cushioning to relieve strain on the plantar fascia,” says Langer.
  • Cushion: While perhaps not as critical to relieving plantar fasciitis pain, adequate cushioning is still important to overall comfort. That level of cushion, however, is subjective, says Langer. It’s a matter of trying on several pairs of shoes to determine the best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis for your needs specifically.
  • Forefoot rocker: This isn’t a must-have feature, but some people with plantar fasciitis may find a shoe with a forefoot rocker or a toe spring may be helpful in relieving fascia pressure. A forefoot rocker is essentially an upward curve of the sole of a shoe underneath the ball of the foot and toes.
  • Firm heel counter: This hard piece of material at the back of the shoes helps stabilize and control the heel and therefore prevent unnecessary movement and overpronation, says Brenner. “By decreasing overpronation, you’re taking stress off of the plantar fascia,” she explains.
  • Stiff insole: Those with plantar fasciitis want to avoid shoes with super flexible soles, says Brenner. “You don’t want to be able to bend the shoe in half like a taco,” she laughs. “Instead, only the toe box should bend.” This helps to stabilize the foot which puts pressure on the plantar fascia, she explains.
  • High heel-to-toe drop: Heel-to-toe drop refers to the difference in thickness of a shoe’s sole between the heel and forefoot. A good range for the best walking shoes for plantar fasciitis is 7 to 12 mm, according to Brenner. Again, this will help put more pressure on the forefoot to therefore take some of the stress off the plantar fascia, she says.

Tips for Walking with Plantar Fasciitis

A light walk can help reduce symptoms of mild cases of plantar fasciitis. However, if the pain is a 5 out of 10, it’s best to rest instead. Specifically, the RICE strategy, or rest, ice, compression, and elevation is helpful to reduce inflammation of the ligament and begin the healing process, says Brenner. Light stretching, such as manually bending the toes gently back to release tension in the tight plantar fascia ligament, and over-the-counter pain medication should help.

If you must walk, limit your time on your feet to less than 10 minutes and avoid concrete terrains (hence why you won’t find a winner for best shoes for walking on concrete with plantar fasciitis), and wear shoes with lots of cushion, she says. Discontinue the activity if you experience stabbing pain or your heel becomes red or swollen, says Brenner.

How does one of the most influential models in the fashion industry dress for their big birthday celebration? When it comes to Gigi Hadid, always expect the unexpected —and in this case, the unexpected style element was Teva hiking sandals.

This past weekend, Hadid embraced her inner child while celebrating her 28th birthday at Disney World with close friends (and Minnie Mouse, of course). Any Gigi Hadid fan knows her personal style has some serious range, from glamazon galore in sleek cocktail attire to laid-back California cool with fresh pops of colorful knitwear and distressed denim, but for her big day of Disney adventures, the young mom and top model leaned into the theme of her birthday festivities by sporting layers of playful necklaces over a graphic tee, paired with oversized not-so-mellow yellow shorts, and completed the look with casual socks under multi-colored Teva Hurricane XLT2 sandals.

As seen in her newly posted Instagram reel, Hadid wore a full face of Patrick Ta makeup and a slicked back, oh-so-chic bun that we would normally expect from the style star, but the genius of combining a sophisticated beauty look with a kid-core ensemble shows just how much fun she has with her fashion choices. What’s even more impressive is her commitment to comfort, as Hadid sported not just one pair of Teva Hurricane XLT2 sandals over the weekend, but two!

Maybe a trip to Disney World might not call for a line-up of slingback pumps and sky-high stilettos, but for a celebrity with a sneaker rotation of countless kicks, including a bunch of cool Adidas sneakers, Converse High Tops, Versace ‘dad’ sneakers, and Vetements x Reebok sock trainers, it’s surprising that Hadid packed socks and sandals on her magic-packed weekend.

Trekking through Animal Kingdom and Epcot calls for some breathable footwear with great support and traction, so Hadid’s choice of Teva sandals actually does make total sense. Besides the grippry rubber outsole, the Teva Hurricane XLT2 features quick-drying webbing that’s perfect for water rides, while the shoes EVA footbed provides all-day support to focus on the fun as she galavants around the park. Plus, the comfortable sandal’s nylon shank ensures her feet are stabilized and locked in to position, thanks to the brand’s signature adjustable straps.

As for her time in the Magic Kingdom, Hadid went for an all-pink ensemble, styling her pink and purple Tevas with bubblegum-pink denim shorts, a pink Minnie Mouse tee, and matching translucent sunglasses.

Hadid’s cozy socks and functional sandals kept her super comfy throughout her time in the wonderful world of Disney, from rollercoasters to the lazy river, and a fireworks show to end the big day — all without sacrificing one bit of style.
